Apple TV+’s Foundation is a standout science fiction series, easily ranking among the best of recent years. While sci-fi has a long history, its popularity and quality have varied, particularly within different subgenres. Space operas, like the original Star Trek and Star Wars, were incredibly popular, but we haven’t seen many new shows of that type since, aside from continuations of those franchises.
Space operas have always had a dedicated following, but quality examples have been scarce lately. Shows focusing on climate change, cyberpunk themes, or psychological thrillers have been more consistently popular – think shows like Fallout, Severance, and Pluribus. Still, science fiction feels incomplete without a strong space opera, and Foundation is currently filling that niche beautifully.
Apple TV’s Foundation Is On Another Level
Apple TV+’s Foundation is a truly stunning science fiction epic. It perfectly embodies everything fans love about space operas, with incredibly detailed and expansive world-building that goes beyond what most TV shows achieve. The story features high-stakes conflicts and compelling characters representing a wide range of familiar roles.
Sci-fi fans today want stories that make them think, and Foundation delivers that alongside the classic space adventure elements. The show uses its detailed backstory to explore important political ideas and really gets into how people and societies behave. What’s at stake isn’t just survival, but also what’s right and wrong, and its realistic approach to future problems encourages viewers to consider the issues we face today. It’s hard to imagine a more compelling sci-fi series.
Foundation Would Not Have Worked In Another Streaming Service
A key reason Foundation has done so well is its availability on Apple TV+. While this production company doesn’t release as many shows annually as competitors like Netflix, Disney+, or Amazon Prime Video, they prioritize quality over quantity. Apple TV+ consistently delivers strong content, and this careful approach to detail is a major factor in its success, particularly in the science fiction genre.
As a sci-fi fan, I’ve noticed a lot of streaming services seem to think they just need a lot of shows to cover the genre, even if they’re just ‘okay’. But AppleTV is doing something different – they’re focusing on quality over quantity. They’ve got a few key shows hitting all the big sci-fi areas, and they’re letting each one really stand out. Think about Severance, Pluribus, Silo, For All Mankind, Dark Matter, and especially Foundation. Honestly, Foundation is amazing, and I can’t imagine another streamer being able to pull off that huge scale and vision. It really needed AppleTV’s backing to work!
Television Needs More Shows Like Foundation
The popularity of Foundation shows just how powerful space operas can be. They’re really at the core of science fiction, and while movies have often been the go-to for this type of story, TV offers so much more possibility. Apple TV’s Foundation has demonstrated the genre’s full potential, and hopefully, we’ll see more like it on that platform. Ultimately, the entire TV industry should invest in creating more shows similar to Foundation.
