„Any nomination I get, I really have to give to him” Expedition 33 voice actor praises motion capture performance

After the Game Awards nominations were announced last week, Charlie Cox, the voice of Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, publicly acknowledged the work of the actor who provided the character’s movements. Expedition 33 recently earned the most Game Award nominations of any game, and if you haven’t played it yet, there are plenty of reasons to check it out. You might also recognize Charlie Cox as Daredevil from the Marvel TV series. He’s known for not actually playing the games he appears in and has jokingly called himself a “fraud” when people compliment the game. Despite this, he clearly appreciates the effort and quality of the game’s development.

Expedition 33 voice actor says he will share any glory with the motion capture actor as well

While Expedition 33 received the most nominations overall at The Game Awards, it especially stood out in the Best Performance category. In fact, three of the six nominees are from Expedition 33: Charlie Cox (as Gustave), Jennifer English (as Maelle), and Ben Starr (as Verso). The other nominees are Erika Ishii (as Atsu in Ghost of Yotei), Konatsu Kato (as Hinako Shimizu in Silent Hill f), and Troy Baker (as Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle).

A video clip of Charlie Cox recently surfaced online where he explained that much of the credit for his performance in the game should go to Maxence Cazorla, a talented French actor who did the majority of the motion capture work. Cox emphasized Cazorla’s crucial role in bringing the character to life, noting it’s often overlooked. Creating a believable video game character is a collaborative effort, involving contributions from voice actors, motion capture performers, and animators.

This follows a similar move by the creator of Megabonk, who also withdrew from consideration for Best Debut Indie last week. It’s clear there’s a lot of graciousness among nominees this year. When the Game Awards are broadcast on December 11th, it will be interesting to see how much recognition Expedition 33 receives – it has the potential to win a lot of awards.
