Anthony Mackie, in an interview with Esquire magazine, shared that taking on the role of Captain America feels like winning an Oscar for him, given how often he’s been overlooked throughout his career. He believes four of his performances – in “Brother to Brother”, “Half Nelson”, “The Banker” and “The Hurt Locker” – deserved award nominations but were consistently overlooked. Now, with “Captain America: Brave New World,” he sees this as his chance to shine and make up for those missed opportunities, having finally been given the lead role in a Marvel blockbuster after 11 years within the franchise.
Mackie discussed with the magazine his thoughts on taking up the role of Captain America, stating that “few discuss the additional baggage that comes with it.” He explained that while leaving the hotel, he doesn’t exit as Anthony Mackie, but rather as Captain America.
Mackie stated that “Brave New World” is, in his opinion, “truly exceptional,” further explaining that it adheres to the style of Marvel productions, specifically Captain America, and offers an enjoyable, grand experience. However, there’s one aspect he isn’t eager about – the politicization of the Marvel blockbuster. Given that Brave New World features Harrison Ford portraying the U.S. president who morphs into the unpredictable Red Hulk, it’s no surprise that comparisons to former President Donald Trump have been prevalent and continue to be a common discussion online before the film hits theaters.
Mackie expressed his hope that as a nation, we’re weary of all the political debates. When asked about fans drawing comparisons between Red Hulk and Trump, particularly since he’s back in the White House, he suggested we should instead focus on enjoying the movies and relaxing. He jokingly added that even if they had made the character yellow, it would have still caused a stir.
Esquire likewise sought Mackie’s perspective on another online conversation gaining traction lately, one labeling Mackie as the “most rude celebrity” some fans have encountered in person. A popular tale that spread across social media was shared by a young woman who asserted that Mackie once arrived in a massive pickup truck at a gas station beside her, lit up a cigar, and snubbed her when she attempted to interact with him as a fan.
According to Mackie, his account of the incident differs. He had been having a tough week – someone had just discovered his phone number and there were 120 missed calls, plus threats from AI that felt ominous. When he stopped at the gas station, a woman suddenly appeared and he responded by saying, “No,” as he remembers it. Furthermore, he points out an inconsistency in the narrative: Who would casually smoke near a gas pump?
