On Tuesday, Anthony Mackie used Instagram to explain the meaning behind his widely-shared statement concerning the symbolism of Captain America.
As an ardent American, donning the hero’s shield, Captain America, is a privilege I hold dear. I hold the men and women who safeguard our nation in the highest regard. The essence of Captain America transcends borders, resonating with people globally, making connections we can all understand.
For the past day, Mackie has faced criticism due to comments he made during an interview in Rome while promoting his latest film “Captain America: Brave New World”. In the interview, Mackie stated that Captain America stands for various ideas, but ‘America’ is not among them.
As for me, Captain America embodies a multitude of ideas, and I believe it’s important to separate him from the concept of ‘America.’ Instead, he symbolizes a man of his word, honor, dignity, and integrity – someone who can be relied upon and is always dependable.
The upcoming movie titled ‘Brave New World,’ releasing on February 14, marks Anthony Mackie’s debut as Captain America following Chris Evans. In the 2019 film ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ Steve Rogers, the original Captain America, quickly aged out of fighting shape and handed over the shield to Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, who was previously known as The Falcon. You might remember Sam Wilson from his first appearance in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier.’ Since then, he teamed up with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes in the Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.’
In addition to Harrison Ford, Rosa Salazar, Liv Tyler, Giancarlo Esposito, Danny Ramirez, and Shira Haas, other key cast members of the “Brave New World” production are present. Julius Onah is directing the film, while Rob Edwards, Malcolm Spellman, and Dalan Musson have penned the script.
