Anthony Joshua’s driver charged with reckless driving & more after crash kills two

Police have confirmed that Anthony Joshua’s driver is facing charges after a car accident in Nigeria. The crash injured Joshua and sadly resulted in the deaths of two of his team members.

Joshua, 36, was injured in a traffic accident on December 29th while driving on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State, Nigeria. He was heading to see family for the New Year and was treated at a hospital before being released.

Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, appeared in court on Friday facing charges related to a recent traffic incident. According to police, he was charged with four offenses: causing death by dangerous driving, reckless driving, driving carelessly, and operating a vehicle without a valid license.

Kayode was released on bail for 5,000,000 Naira, which is about $3,469, but he must meet certain conditions before being fully released. The court will continue hearing the case on January 20th.

Driver charged over fatal crash in Ogun state

Joshua was riding in a Lexus SUV when it hit a truck parked on the highway. Sadly, his trainers, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, died at the scene. Photos showed Joshua being helped out of the damaged vehicle after the accident.

Officials from Ogun and Lagos states released a statement saying British boxer Anthony Joshua was deeply saddened by the deaths of his friends, Ayodele and Ghami. After leaving the hospital on Wednesday, Joshua went to the funeral home to pay his respects as their bodies were prepared to be sent home.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter for many years, honored Latz and Sina with a tribute on Instagram, writing, “Rest in peace Latz and Sina.”

Joshua, originally from Watford and with family connections to Sagamu, was in Nigeria after winning his fight against Jake Paul on December 19th.

Paul shared a message on X, saying he was thinking of and praying for everyone impacted by the crash, and specifically for Joshua’s recovery.
