Anthem has officially been discontinued. BioWare shut down the game’s servers on January 12, 2026, bringing an end to the game’s troubled run.
Anthem, developed by BioWare (the studio known for popular games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age), was released on February 22, 2019, for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Because of BioWare’s strong reputation, there was a lot of anticipation for the game.
The online shooter had a difficult launch. It didn’t have much to offer players initially, required a lot of repetitive effort, and its story wasn’t very engaging, causing it to lose popularity quickly.
It’s a little sad, but after almost seven years, Anthem is officially over. The servers are down, so you can’t play the game anymore. It had a rough launch, but I still had some fun with it, so it’s definitely bittersweet to see it go.
Anthem servers taken offline
Following the difficult launch of the game, BioWare promised fans they were planning to overhaul the main gameplay experience, focusing on giving players clear objectives, engaging challenges, and rewards that truly feel worthwhile.
The blog post was updated in February 2020, but a year later, in February 2021, development on the game completely stopped.
On July 3, 2025, EA announced the end for Anthem. They stopped selling in-game currency and stated the game would no longer be available after January 12, 2026.
Electronic Arts (EA) is closing the servers for the game ‘Anthem’. After January 12, 2026, the game will no longer work, and players will not receive any money back.

Anthem is now officially unplayable. The game’s servers have been shut down, making it inaccessible, just like other games such as Concord, XDefiant, and MultiVersus. Because Anthem required a constant online connection, there’s no way to play it at all anymore – not even in single-player mode.
We’re not offering refunds because the game has been available for nearly seven years and was frequently sold at a reduced price.
BioWare is now focusing on the Mass Effect series again, picking up the main story after the 2017 game, Andromeda, which received a somewhat mixed response from players.
We don’t yet know when the new Mass Effect game will be released. The developers are just starting to focus on it after spending several years working on Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which came out in 2024 and received mixed reactions.
