Another MFL Surge for One Battle After Another

Here’s a look at the scores from Week 16 of Vulture’s Movies Fantasy League. While it’s too late to join for this season, you can still keep up with everything at the league hub and by signing up for our weekly newsletter.

I’m still blown away by how well Avatar: Fire and Ash is doing! For the fourth weekend in a row, audiences have shown their love by flocking to theaters, and it took the top spot again. That earned it another 20 points, bringing its total domestic box office to an incredible $342 million. Zootopia 2 is still doing well with $378 million – it’s the third highest-grossing movie of 2025 – but Minecraft and Lilo & Stitch weren’t competing for points. Because Avatar has been number one for so many weeks, it’s actually taken the lead in the overall standings for box-office points, which is amazing!

The movie The Housemaid is proving to be a big success, earning around $94 million so far, and is on track to become a top five film in the league based on box office points. Despite being drafted by only 1,261 people – making it the 40th most popular pick – those who invested the $5 to include it in their lineup are seeing a great return. Starring Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, and directed by Paul Feig, it’s poised to cross the $100 million mark this week.

Okay, so at the box office this weekend, Marty Supreme is doing really well, hitting $70 million and looks like it’s going to push past $100 million thanks to all the awards buzz around Timothée Chalamet. I’m pleasantly surprised by Song Sung Blue – it’s really outperforming a lot of other similar films this year, bringing in $31 million. Sadly, Is This Thing On? didn’t quite catch on, only making $3 million after going wide. But the big news is Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 totally crushed it, earning a $125 million bonus, and Anaconda also did great, hitting the $50 million mark.

The full list of box-office performers this weekend (amounts are cumulative earnings to date):

Okay, so I’ve been looking at the box office numbers, and it’s pretty interesting! ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ absolutely dominated with $342 million – a huge win! ‘Zootopia 2’ also did incredibly well, pulling in $378 million. ‘Wicked: For Good’ was right up there too, with $341 million. Then you’ve got solid performers like ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ at $126 million. ‘The Housemaid’ made $94 million, and even ‘The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants’ still brought in $63 million. ‘Marty Supreme’ did okay with $70 million, and ‘Anaconda’ managed $54 million. After that, things drop off quite a bit – ‘Hamnet’ at $12 million, ‘Eternity’ at $16 million, and a few films like ‘Song Sung Blue’ at $31 million. And honestly, ‘Is This Thing On?’ and ‘No Other Choice’ both only made $3 million, and ‘The Secret Agent’ barely registered at $2 million. It really shows how much the audience favored certain movies over others!

Gonna Be, Gonna Be Golden

The Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night saw wins concentrated among a small number of films, with only eight taking home trophies. One Battle After Another was the biggest winner, continuing its successful awards season run. It won Best Picture (Musical/Comedy), Best Supporting Actress for Teyana Taylor, and awards for both Best Director and Best Screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson. Each award is worth 25 points, except for the top film awards in the Drama and Musical/Comedy categories, which are worth 35. This brought One Battle After Another‘s total score to 1,216 points, a significant 500 points ahead of Wicked: For Good, which is currently in second place.

Hamnet earned 60 points by winning awards for Best Picture (Drama) and Best Actress (Jessie Buckley). Sinners received 50 points for its wins in Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, as well as Original Score. The Secret Agent and KPop Demon Hunters also took home multiple awards: The Secret Agent won Best Film not in the English Language and Best Actor in a Drama (Wagner Moura), while KPop Demon Hunters won Best Original Song and Best Animated Film.

Full Golden Globes points as follows:

Here’s a quick look at recent releases and their estimated sales figures: ‘One Battle After Another’ leads with 110 sales, followed by ‘Hamnet’ at 60. ‘Sinners,’ ‘The Secret Agent,’ and ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ each sold 50 copies. ‘Marty Supreme,’ ‘If I Had Legs I’d Kick You,’ and ‘Sentimental Value’ all reached 25 sales.

An Actors Points for Me

The Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations for the Actor Awards (formerly known by a different name) last week. Despite some feeling the new name is lackluster, the film One Battle After Another received a strong showing with seven nominations, including awards for the entire cast and stunt team. Leonardo DiCaprio, Chase Infiniti, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, and Sean Penn also received individual nominations. The film earned a total of 130 points, making it a likely contender for the Oscars.

The team Sinners came in second with 90 points, earning nominations for Best Cast, Best Stunt Ensemble, and individual recognition for Michael B. Jordan, Wunmi Mosaku, and Miles Caton.

Full Actors Awards points:

Here’s a list of scores: One Battle After Another received 130, Sinners got 90, and both Hamnet and Marty Supreme scored 65. Frankenstein earned 50, while Bugonia received 40. Several entries – Song Sung Blue, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Blue Moon, Weapons, and Wicked For Good – all scored 20. Finally, F1 and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning both received a score of 5.

Clooneys for Grown-ups

The AARP Movies for Grownups Awards took place this weekend (though you can watch them on PBS in February). As usual, One Battle After Another was a big winner, taking home three awards – Best Screenwriter, Best Supporting Actress (Regina Hall), and Best Ensemble – adding 30 points to its awards total. However, several other films that haven’t gotten much attention this awards season also received recognition. George Clooney won Best Actor for Jay Kelly, and Laura Dern was named Best Actress for Is This Thing On? Sentimental Value won two awards – Best Intergenerational Film and Best Foreign Language Film – and Delroy Lindo earned a well-deserved Supporting Actor win for Sinners.

Here’s a breakdown of scores: ‘One Battle After Another’ received 30 points, while ‘Hamnet’ and ‘Sentimental Value’ both scored 20. Several titles – ‘Frankenstein’, ‘Is This Thing On?’, ‘Jay Kelly’, ‘Sinners’, and ‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere’ – each earned 10 points.

The Guilded Age

Last week also saw nominations announced by the Directors Guild and Producers Guild. The Directors Guild recognizes directors in three categories: feature films, documentaries, and first-time directors. The Producers Guild, on the other hand, nominates ten feature films and five documentaries.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) announced its nominees, largely as predicted, but didn’t include any of the highly praised foreign-language films of the year, which meant Joachim Trier (for Sentimental Value) and Jafar Panahi (for It Was Just an Accident) were left out. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) nominations, however, included a few surprises with selections like Weapons and F1.

Full PGA points:

The following titles all have a score of 15: Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, Sentimental Value, Sinners, Train Dreams, Weapons, The Alabama Solution, Cover-Up, and The Perfect Neighbor.
