NCIS: Origins is facing another cast shake-up for its second season, with reports suggesting a major character won’t be back.
A new trailer for the show suggests Mary Jo might be leaving the team. The trailer opens with Woody rushing Gibbs and Randy into the lab, where Phil asks if Mary Jo is being transferred to another office. Gibbs responds that they are working to prevent the transfer.
Viewers won’t know for sure if Mary Jo is leaving the show until the season finale airs on Tuesday, March 24th. However, the latest trailer reveals more about Diane Sterling’s future: she’ll be working part-time with the team as a criminal investigator for the IRS, while continuing her relationship with Gibbs, and enjoying dates on weekends.
The season finale of NCIS will feature Mary Jo teaming up with a friend from her past after the regional director attempts to transfer her. Together, they investigate the mysterious deaths of two Marines found on the side of the road.
Although Mary Jo’s character on NCIS: Origins doesn’t have a clear path forward right now, there could still be surprises for viewers down the line. Executive producer David J. North told TV Insider that they really like the character and intentionally left the door open for a return. He and co-producer Gina Monreal have specific plans for some of the characters, and they’re keeping those plans—and whether certain characters are even still alive after 33 years—a secret to maintain the integrity of their storyline.
Mark Harmon, known for his role as Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, left NCIS during season 19 in 2021. He now provides narration for the show’s prequel and also serves as an executive producer on the original NCIS. Tyla Abercrumbie plays Mary Jo and has been with the prequel series since it began in 2024. If her character were to leave, it would significantly change the show and the relationships between the team members, which have been central to the series since the beginning.
NCIS is CBS’s longest-running drama and will be back for a 24th season.
NCIS: Origins airs Tuesdays, 9:00 pm ET on CBS.
