As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for European cinema and a soft spot for stories that resonate deeply with society, I am genuinely excited about this upcoming series based on Spain’s Toxic Oil Syndrome. Having lived through the era of similar food scandals, albeit not on such a catastrophic scale, I can appreciate the gravity and the long-lasting impact such tragedies have on communities.
Content Anónima España, in partnership with Anonymous Content and Morena Films (responsible for “Piggy” and “Below Zero”), is collaborating with Alea Media to create a series inspired by Spain’s 1981 Toxic Oil Syndrome – one of the most tragic instances of food contamination in contemporary Europe, if not the deadliest.
The as-yet-unnamed series marks the initial venture of Anonymous Content España, highlighting their aim to transform local narratives into high-quality TV productions that resonate both locally and globally, as expressed by their Managing Director, Beatriz Campos.
For this task, Alea Media is an outstanding choice as a collaborator. It’s recognized as one of the most successful and adaptable television production companies in Spain, with a track record that includes hits such as “Patria,” a reconciliation tale for HBO Europe, “Wrong Side of the Tracks,” a war veteran vs. drug gang drama-thriller for Mediaset España which topped Netflix’s global non-English language charts from February 26 to March 3, and “Yo Adicto,” an addiction survival drama for Disney+ Spain.
Under the leadership of former Studiocanal executive Campos, who was recently appointed as managing director in February, Anonymous Content España is set to spearhead the project. Aitor Gabilondo, founder of Alea Media, will oversee the creative and scriptwriting aspects alongside his team at the company.
The new series seems to share many similarities with “Patria,” particularly in terms of its subject matter, scope, diverse viewpoints, and poignant social commentary. Historically, the Toxic Oil Syndrome outbreak occurred due to contaminated rapeseed oil, spreading in May 1981. This tragic event affected approximately 25,000 people, leading to the loss of over 4,000 lives, and impacting countless others, both physically and psychologically, even up to this day.
The show will delve into the 50-day period, starting from the mysterious demise of an eight-year-old child, and ending with the announcement that tainted rapeseed oil was the culprit.
As I delve into this narrative, I’ll be sharing the varied viewpoints of victims and their loved ones, intertwined with the heroic efforts of two pediatricians as they strive to comprehend and control the spreading crisis. Furthermore, I’ll shed light on the actions taken by those tasked with managing the situation, while also examining the role that society as a whole played during that time.
Campos stated that this event has affected numerous generations. Being an avid fan of shows such as ‘Patria’ and ‘I, Addict,’ I am absolutely convinced that Alea Media is the ideal creative collaborator to develop a groundbreaking series that will authentically portray the true magnitude of the tragedy,” she continued.
Sara Martin Rada, managing director of Alea Media, commented on our partnership with Anonymous Content, a globally renowned media company responsible for innovative and intriguing projects, saying it is crucial for us because we value the opportunity to expand our reach and influence in the international market.
A Tragedy Which Echoes Down the Decades
By centering on the affected individuals and their loved ones, the series takes on a “character-centric” approach, ensuring that each narrative carries substantial significance. Simultaneously, the pediatricians and their colleagues infuse elements of urgency and suspense into the storyline as they tirelessly work to identify and halt the source of the poisoning.
The work they’ve done will give the series a deeper, more widespread sense of tragedy that reverberates through time. Starting from May 1, 1981, when the first confirmed fatality occurred, doctors were left baffled by the mysterious disease and lacked the knowledge to provide effective treatment for their patients.
On June 10th, the Spanish government declared during late-night news that the outbreak was due to tainted cooking oil. An article titled “Cover-Up” by Bob Woffinden in The Guardian labels this declaration as a “prototype scientific fraud.” Since no thorough scientific investigation has been conducted, it’s unlikely that the series will provide a conclusive answer regarding the Syndrome’s origin. However, it could potentially plant seeds of doubt about the official explanation.
According to Martin Rada from Alea Media, the series aligns flawlessly with our preferred editorial style and the type of compelling, uncomfortable narratives we prefer. At the time it was released, Toxic Oil Syndrome shed light on two distressing incidents: the contamination and loss of thousands of lives, as well as the mishandling of the disaster – issues that sadly remain relevant in today’s world.
At this point in our project, we’re eager to consider various funding options,” Campos stated. “We view ‘Chernobyl,’ ‘It’s a Sin,’ ‘Mr Bates and the Post Office,’ and ‘Patria’ as excellent examples of what we aim to accomplish, and I’m confident we’ll find the right platform that enables us to strike a balance between local and global success.
Anonymous Content: Its International Roll Out
The series is also a notable step forward in Anonymous Content’s global expansion, achieved through strategic collaborations with top-tier international partners to establish Anonymous Content Brazil, Anonymous Content España, France’s Anonymous Federation, Anonymous Content Nordic, U.K.’s AC Chapter One, and a joint venture with Brouhaha Entertainment in Australia and New Zealand.
David Davoli, President of International at Anonymous Content, stated to EbMaster that we are committed to providing any necessary resources for Beatriz, Aitor, and their project. This includes help with packaging, financing, distribution, and strategic planning for global release, as well as utilizing our creative abilities to produce an exceptional series editorially. Early indications suggest this approach is proving effective.
Amongst the latest projects from AC International, a segment of AC Studios, “Boy Swallows Universe” by Brouhaha emerged victorious at the 2024 Logie Awards; AC Chapter One’s 2023 Jack Thorne miniseries “Best Interests,” premiered on BBC 1 to widespread praise, with Sharon Horgan receiving high accolades for her fierce portrayal of a tormented mother, as The Guardian put it. Meanwhile, Anonymous Content Nordic’s Netflix production “The Snow Sister” has recently been released. Upcoming projects include “Perfect Days” for Globoplay and Walter Salles’ documentary series about legendary Brazilian soccer player Sócrates, both under the umbrella of Anonymous Content Brazil.
