Just because something ends doesn’t mean it’s truly over – unless we’re talking about the classic 1978 comedy . Sadly, this beloved film will be removed from Netflix at the start of the new year.
The classic comedy Animal House will be leaving Netflix on January 1st. It was added to the streaming service just six months ago, on July 1st. Directed by John Landis, the film follows the wild antics of the Delta Tau Chi fraternity at Faber College, who, led by the mischievous Bluto Blutarsky (played by John Belushi), constantly clash with their uptight dean.
Often considered the movie that popularized raunchy humor, Animal House was the first film based on the National Lampoon brand, which later created comedies like National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and National Lampoon’s Senior Trip. The film also launched the movie career of John Belushi, who was a rising star on Saturday Night Live at the time.
Although critics had a mixed reaction when it first came out, Animal House became a huge surprise hit. Made with a small budget of only $3 million, the film went on to earn $141.6 million worldwide. Over the past five decades, its reputation has grown, with recognition from Bravo and the American Film Institute as one of the greatest comedies, and in 2001, it was chosen for preservation by the Library of Congress.
Even today, Animal House remains popular with viewers. It has impressive scores on Rotten Tomatoes, with 91% of critics and 89% of the general audience giving it positive reviews. Critics especially admire the film for being groundbreaking and continue to highlight its fantastic acting, memorable lines, and classic ending.
Animal House’s Cast Had An Inkling That The Film Would Be A Success
Though many things contributed to Animal House‘s success as a classic comedy, actor Tim Matheson believes the movie’s memorable lines played a big role. He even said those lines were a good sign during filming that they were creating something special.
The cast and crew filmed scenes six days a week, and on Sundays, they’d review the raw, unedited footage together, according to actor Chris Matheson, who played Eric “Otter” Stratton in the film. He shared this memory in a 2021 interview with The Library of Congress Blogs.
We knew we were on the right track because the film crew would come to work on Mondays repeating lines like, ‘Thank you, sir, may I have another?’ or ‘Is that a pledge pin?’ and ‘Seven years of college down the drain.’ That told us the film was really resonating with people and that each character was memorable.
Animal House is currently available to stream on Netflix through Jan 1.
