Things are tough for players who’ve built hotels in Animal Crossing. The recent 3.0 update added a lot of features, but the biggest change is a new, official hotel that appears on every island’s pier. This new resort has quickly made many player-created hotels unnecessary.
The idea of an economy doesn’t feel as important in Animal Crossing: New Horizons since most transactions happen through loans with Tom Nook. However, the new hotel feature has made it simple for many players to replace older resorts they built themselves, as those creations now seem outdated.
A Redditor named ll_LoneWolfe_ll posted that the long-awaited update has arrived, but the local, family-owned hotel is struggling because of a new hotel built illegally on the pier. They expressed concern for the well-being of everyone on the island.
Players of Animal Crossing have always loved creating hotels, even though the game doesn’t actually let you build one that works. Instead, people get creative! Some players carefully design the inside of their buildings to look like hallways and rooms, while others focus on making impressive hotel fronts that look good from a distance.
A recent Reddit post highlighted the closing of the Dodo Hotel on an island in a video game—a beautiful building created simply for looks. These kinds of details are becoming impressive works of art, letting players design realistic cities that feel like everything from sunny Greek islands to bustling cityscapes or even faraway luxury resorts.
The recent 3.0 update officially adds hotels to the game, something players have long requested. However, the hotel design is quite strict – each island has a single, designated spot for it, limiting customization. Players quickly found that while the hotel building itself can’t be moved, the area around it can be modified.
It wasn’t surprising that players quickly began personalizing their docks to make them unique among all the islands in the game. One player, a Redditor named jorgom, created a hotel themed around the Sanrio character Pompompurin, using custom designs, fences, pillars, and furniture to transform a standard dock into something special and personal.
The new hotel in Animal Crossing highlights the game’s constant balance between what players can create and the restrictions Nintendo puts in place. While Nintendo has given players more creative freedom than before, those tools still have limits. However, the player community continues to be incredibly resourceful, finding clever ways to decorate and build within – and even around – those boundaries.
Although player-created hotels are becoming less common, the desire to customize and build remains strong. Even when the game provides structures, players continue to reshape them, demonstrating that the heart of New Horizons lies not in Nintendo’s updates, but in player creativity.
