Rovio, the company behind Angry Birds, is cutting around 36 jobs. This comes after one of their recent games didn’t perform as well as they’d hoped.
A representative from the game developer, which is owned by Sega, confirmed that no future games have been cancelled. However, they stated that “Angry Birds Dream Blast” hasn’t been as successful as they hoped.
The company is laying off 36 employees, including some in leadership positions. Moving forward, Rovio’s team in Finland will focus on developing fewer game titles, while the Barcelona office will be expanding its operations.
Rovio announced they’ve been restructuring this fall after one of their games didn’t perform as well as expected. They’re aiming to be more focused on games themselves and to quickly develop and test new ideas to better meet market demands.
Rovio announced the layoffs as part of a company restructuring, and also stated they were creating some new positions.
So, Sega dropped a huge amount of cash – over $750 million, actually – to buy the folks at Rovio last year. It’s a big move for them to get even stronger in the mobile gaming world, and honestly, I’m excited to see what they do with Angry Birds and all their other games!
Besides all the existing Angry Birds games, a new Angry Birds movie is scheduled for release in December 2026. Joining the voice cast are Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Rachel Bloom, Tim Robinson, Sam Richardson, Lily James, Danny McBride, Keke Palmer, and most recently, MrBeast.
