As a spectator who’s been following Angelina Jolie‘s career with bated breath, witnessing her transformation for the role of Maria Callas has been nothing short of awe-inspiring. Her journey, marked by intense training and emotional vulnerability, is a testament to her dedication as an artist.

During an intimate conversation with BBC News, Angelina Jolie shared that working on the Maria Callas biopic brought about a unique level of emotional exposure to her children, especially her sons Maddox, aged 23, and Pax, who are 21. As they took on roles as production assistants, this filming experience led to a profound emotional connection between them on set.

Jolie shared with BBC News that her sons had never seen her show much pain before, but they did during her portrayal of a troubled opera character. This role provided a unique opportunity for her to be more open and honest with her children about her emotions.

The film “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín, signifies a notable comeback to leading roles for Angelina Jolie. Preliminary reactions, such as a Golden Globe acting nomination, hint at possible Academy Award recognition. For the part, Jolie underwent seven months of rigorous opera training, confessing that she was initially hesitant about singing before accepting the role due to shyness.

During the commencement of the opera classes, the demands placed on breath control, physicality, and personal exertion are quite distinct,” noted Jolie, who seamlessly blends her own voice with original recordings of Callas.

Director Larraín commended the valuable work of both Maddox and Pax on set, as Jolie disclosed that Pax had recorded her initial vocal coaching sessions. “It’s inspiring for kids to see their mother struggle and not succeed effortlessly,” she mused, “but sweat, argue, fail, and then try again.

The film “Maria,” penned by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, primarily explores Callas’ later years in 1970s Paris. It made its debut at Venice, receiving an impressive eight-minute standing ovation. In September, its New York City premiere was graced by Maddox, Pax, and their sister Zahara.
