Andy Weir is weighing in on some of his favorite scenes from .
The new Amazon MGM movie, based on Andy Weir’s popular 2021 novel, hit screens on Friday to a lot of excitement. The story follows Ryland Grace, an ordinary person who becomes an astronaut with the incredible mission of saving the planet from being wiped out. It’s a fast-paced science fiction adventure where Grace joins forces with an alien named Rocky to prevent a coming ice age.
The movie is just as thrilling as the book. Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, it’s fundamentally a story about what it means to be human, especially when facing incredibly difficult decisions. It’s also a heartwarming tale of friendship, focusing on the surprising connection between Grace and Rocky. In a recent interview with Liam Crowley of ScreenRant, author Andy Weir discussed the film’s exciting moments, highlighting one scene in particular: the rescue of Adrian, which truly tests Grace’s abilities.
I absolutely love that scene. It’s definitely one of my favorites in the movie, right up there with the moment Mark first communicates with Rocky.
This scene is arguably the most suspenseful in the film, following Grace as she bravely enters a dangerous alien environment to collect vital samples. It’s a grand, captivating moment that combines scientific exploration with intense drama and stunning visuals, keeping viewers completely engaged. Although a particular scene with Rocky is memorable, director Weir believes Adrian’s retrieval boasts the most impressive visual effects.
Andy Weir praised the atmospheric sampling sequence with Adrian, calling it visually stunning. The team jokingly referred to it as the ‘fishing sequence’ during production.
Andy Weir, the author, explained to ScreenRant that he didn’t contribute much to the visual design of the planet or the character Rocky. He clarified it wasn’t due to a lack of invitation, but because he struggles to visualize things and imagine how they’d look on screen.
I wasn’t very involved in the visual aspects of the project. It wasn’t for lack of invitation, but I don’t naturally visualize things well. When I write, I just picture characters as vague shapes – like a blob for Ryland, a blob for Rocky. I figured out how Rocky worked physically, but not what he’d actually look like. I’m just not a very visual person, so I let the artists handle that part.
And once those people did their thing, Weir said it all just clicked.
When the team presented their initial concepts for the characters, it immediately clicked for me. I instantly visualized them as Rocky and Ryland, and it all made sense. Because I hadn’t formed any strong mental images beforehand, there was no confusion or disconnect – it just felt right.
Viewers seem to love the film’s look, which was overseen by director Andy Weir. Project Hail Mary is getting fantastic reviews even before it hits theaters on Friday, boasting a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 98% score on Popcornmeter.
