Andy Garcia’s incredible Landman cameo leaves one big question for Season 2

From the final episode of Landman Season 1, there are many points worth exploring, but perhaps the most shocking twist was Andy Garcia’s appearance to resolve the situation. So, what could this imply for Season 2? (Be aware: spoilers follow!)

In a challenging turn of events, Landman’s final act proved to be the most difficult for Tommy Norris so far. It wasn’t just about losing his superior or witnessing one of his wells blast – the landman also endured severe torment at the hands of Jimenez and his team.

It’s fortunate that a more formidable figure than Jimenez showed up to aid Tommy – Andy Garcia. As time was running out, Garcia’s character disrupted the existing order and set the stage for a potentially decisive connection in Season 2, which could either make or break Tommy.

So, who does Andy Garcia play in the finale, and why could he be important down the line?

Who does Andy Garcia play in Landman?

In the tenth episode of Landman, Andy Garcia takes on the role of Gallino, the leader of a drug cartel. For the first time, we see him intervening to rescue Tommy from the clutches of Jimenez.

During the first season of Landman, Tommy finds himself constantly harassed by Jimenez and his gang from the drug cartel following their initial business agreement in episode 1.

A disastrous incident occurs when a vehicle collides with Jimenez’s aircraft on the M-Tex Oil-constructed road, causing significant losses and legal complications for Jimenez (losing millions from his products) and Tommy (facing numerous legal problems).

Later on, Jimenez repeatedly issues threats across ten episodes. In the final episode, the situation intensifies dramatically as he abducts Tommy and subjects him to brutal torture within the confines of a bar’s backroom. Instead of sparing him, he inflicts severe pain by hammering nails into his leg and even dousing him with gasoline. The landman is left with no mercy from Jimenez.

Moments from meeting a fiery death, Tommy finds unexpected rescue as gunshots ring out from another part of the room. Upon having the sack covering his face removed, he recognizes Gallino (Garcia), the cartel’s chief, who had callously murdered his own men to ensure Tommy’s survival.

According to Jimenez, he failed to grasp the importance of the alliance between the cartel and M-Tex Oil. Gallino, however, understands that they need to collaborate with mutual understanding in order to jointly utilize the territory. Therefore, he assists Tommy by offering him a cigarette and finding a way for him to exit the building, using an ingenious vending machine door.

It appears that Gallino could significantly expand his role in Landman Season 2, potentially even transforming into a significant character and potential nemesis for the protagonist. With Jon Hamm’s character no longer available due to its demise, there is a need for a new leading figure to fill the void left by the departed star power. Additionally, Tommy requires a fresh adversary for future conflicts.

However, things might not be as straightforward as they seem. Gallino appears to hold respect for Tommy and his work, going so far as expressing a desire to be friends, despite Tommy’s hesitance. He also suggests an interest in collaborating with Tommy in the oil industry. This could make him a valuable ally.

Despite Gallino appearing more courteous and charming compared to Jimenez, it’s important to remember that he recently killed half of his own crew. Moreover, the message he receives from the Police Chief indicates a level of power that might exceed our current understanding.

There’s no doubt he’s a dangerous man. The question is: how much of a danger could he be for Tommy?

In other words, whether or not Tommy and Gallino make a strong team really hinges on if Tommy actually plays ball with him. However, given Tommy’s unpredictability, it’s hard to say for sure how things will turn out.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a bit apprehensive when star Billy Bob Thornton hinted at potential challenges ahead, sharing with Variety: “Tommy seems to be engaging with an incredibly intelligent individual now. Previously, the others were employed by him, but it appears that Tommy is conversing directly with this mastermind himself.

That has its pros and cons. Given his intelligence, it’s hard to predict if Tommy might unwittingly fall for something.

He commented, “It’s wise to maintain a tight bond with your allies and stay well-informed about your adversaries. Tommy thinks that by developing a semi-friendly relationship with this individual, they might be able to find a solution, since this situation is bound to resolve itself one way or another.

Landman Season 1 is available to stream on Paramount+ now.
