Andy Garcia’s Landman Villain Gallino Explained

Viewers were first introduced to Gallino at the conclusion of season one of Landman. Throughout the season, Tommy had been facing trouble with Jimenez and his cartel, eventually leading to his kidnapping and torture. Just when it seemed Jimenez was about to kill Tommy as a warning to others, Gallino and a team of men raided the bar. Gallino rescued Tommy and allowed him to escape.

We soon discovered that Gallino was a more important leader within the same criminal organization as Jimenez. He released Tommy not out of kindness, but to expand the cartel’s operations into the oil business, alongside their drug trafficking. Initially, it appeared Gallino intended to strong-arm Tommy into giving the cartel a share of M-Tex’s company.

While rescuing Tommy, Gallino showed a surprising side to his personality. Despite being a clever and powerful businessman, he was both charismatic and polite, even when issuing threats. He seems open-minded and recognizes that the cartel needs to move beyond just drug trafficking to succeed. It also became clear that Gallino has significant influence, as he controls the local police.

In season 2, episode 2 of Landman, we learn more about Gallino. Neil and Tommy find out he operates publicly as Dan Morrell, the founder of Sonrisa, a company that provides loans to oil businesses. He previously expressed a desire to work with Tommy, not Cooper, at the end of the first season of Landman. Plus, Cooper’s business seemed very risky, and the deal heavily favored him – Sonrisa only receives 18% of the profits after recovering its costs.

It appears Gallino had advance information about where Cooper was planning to drill for oil. Cooper himself said every well struck oil, which is highly unusual. This suggests Gallino may be using Cooper as an unknowing front to allow a cartel to enter the oil business.
