With the growing popularity of multiplayer and games that are constantly updated, some have wondered about the future of single-player games. However, a recent survey by Ampere Analysis shows that 56% of gamers still prefer playing single-player titles.
A recent survey by Ampere, with feedback from 34,000 gamers in 22 countries, reveals growing interest in single-player games – up 4% in the last four years. The survey also shows that women (58%) and men (56%) have fairly similar preferences for these types of games.
The survey revealed a strong link between age and preference for single-player games. Players aged 55 to 64 were most likely to enjoy single-player experiences, with 64% choosing it as their favorite. This compares to 49% of younger players (16-24) and 56% of those aged 25-34. Essentially, interest in single-player games tends to grow as players get older.
According to the report, 65% of gamers in the US prefer playing single-player games – the highest percentage of any country. In contrast, only 47% of gamers in China feel the same way, making them the least likely to choose single-player experiences.
According to Ampere’s Louise Wooldridge, despite the popularity of games with ongoing subscriptions and purchases, single-player games remain popular and in demand. While multiplayer games are generally better at keeping players engaged and generating revenue, a well-made single-player game can still attract a large audience. Although many gamers actually prefer single-player experiences, word-of-mouth and recommendations from friends are still important for discovering new games.
Recently, Naughty Dog decided to stop development on a Last of Us multiplayer game to concentrate on single-player experiences, including their new game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Swen Vincke, the director of Baldur’s Gate 3, has strongly disagreed with the idea that single-player games are no longer popular. CD Projekt, known for The Witcher and Cyberpunk series, has also reaffirmed its dedication to creating single-player titles. Sony recently highlighted that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla remains one of the most popular games on PlayStation 5 since its 2020 release.
