An Underrated DC Character is the Absolute Universe’s Next Big Problem

Okay, so I just read that one of DC’s seriously overlooked bad guys is now going after the most powerful Green Lantern ever – the Absolute Green Lantern! It’s awesome to see a lesser-known villain stepping up to challenge such a big shot. Honestly, I’m really hyped to see how this fight plays out.

A preview of DC Comics’ Absolute Green Lantern #9 (from Al Ewing, Sid Kotian, Pressy, and Lucas Gattoni) reveals Doctor Steve Dayton hard at work on his new invention, the Mento Device. This technology allows him to connect with a unique and powerful consciousness. However, his assistant, Terry, isn’t who he seems – he’s actually Nemesis, a virtually undetectable assassin who can strike without warning, even when in plain sight.

Tom Tresser first appeared in the 1980 comic book The Brave and the Bold #166, in a story called “Nemesis.” He began as a government agent trying to prove his brother’s innocence and expose a hidden conspiracy. Presumed dead, Tom actually went into hiding and reinvented himself as Nemesis – a master of disguise who could look like almost anyone, aided by special masks that allowed him to alter his appearance.

Nemesis has been a valuable member of many teams throughout the years, such as the Shadow Fighters and the Suicide Squad. Although the original version of Tresser has faded into relative obscurity, this new ‘Absolute’ version has the potential to become the most well-known and dangerous Nemesis ever.

I’ve been diving into the Absolute Green Lantern series, and it’s seriously cool how they’re taking these classic space heroes and giving them fresh takes. It’s not just a simple rehash, either – they’re really changing things up. For example, Hal Jordan? They’ve given him this incredibly dangerous power tied to the Black Hand, and it’s way more chaotic and unpredictable than anything he’s dealt with before. It’s a really interesting direction!

Sojourner and Hal aren’t the only ones with extraordinary abilities in this universe. John Stewart, for example, now possesses the Gold Flame, known as Aur, which has unlocked incredible potential within him. Similarly, Guy Gardner, who was once a local sheriff and presumed destroyed, has become the bearer of the Red Flame, Rao – one of the four core energies of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum in this universe.

Absolute Green Lantern #9 goes on sale December 3 from DC Comics.
