A strong title is crucial for making a good first impression, particularly in the crowded world of video games. Take The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles, an indie RPG by Fix-a-Bug – its humorous style is immediately apparent. Interestingly, the game actually had an even funnier title when it was released in Japan!
I just read a really funny story about the development of The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles! Apparently, the developer, Paolo Nicoletti, accidentally uploaded a demo to Steam with a totally inappropriate title! Game*Spark reported on it – Automaton did the translation, so huge thanks to them for letting me know about this hilarious mistake.
The game was released under the name Kuso Dungeon, which roughly translates to “Crap Dungeon.” While the word kuso can sometimes refer to something campy or parodic, especially in Asia, it can also be understood as a Japanese curse word. This has caused some confusion, as you might imagine.
Nicoletti explained that the game’s unintentionally funny name came about due to a poor translation process. Surprisingly, this mistake actually helped the game gain attention, which he called “accidental marketing at its finest.” When Japanese players started seeing “The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles” with its amusing new title on Steam, the game quickly went viral on X (formerly Twitter), and wishlists in that region increased significantly.
Even though the game’s title was quickly corrected, the initial mistake actually turned out to be a positive thing for Nicoletti and their team. They shared that the developers were amused by the situation along with everyone else before swiftly resolving the issue. As a result, The Crazy Hyper-Dungeon Chronicles and its creators are now getting significantly more attention and positive feedback than they likely would have with a typical game title.
