John Lithgow recently wrote a poem for Stephen Colbert, which felt like a bit much praise, even considering it’s the show’s final weeks. It’s clear Colbert isn’t always comfortable with the overwhelming admiration he gets from both guests and the audience. Watching the show, it’s become obvious that this farewell is giving famous people a rare chance to express their own fan enthusiasm. They’re used to being the ones people approach with heartfelt stories about how their work impacted them – like telling John Lithgow that Orange County helped them reconnect with their hometown – and they politely listen. Now, they’re doing the same thing to Colbert, and he handles it with the same graciousness. The only difference is, when a regular person gets excited around Lithgow, it doesn’t happen on TV.
Late night shows experienced some noticeable tension with their audiences this week. While two audience interactions already made a ‘top five’ list, there were two other interesting moments. On Have I Got News for You, comedian Gianmarco Soresi jokingly pointed out the audience’s muted reaction to a controversial joke about America and Israel, compared to their response to a joke about the Iran war and the Epstein case. He simply said, “Oh, less applause for that one I noticed.” Meanwhile, when Conan O’Brien was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss the Oscars, he seemed uneasy with the audience chanting his name, telling them, “You sound like an angry jury, so just settle down.” It seems the audiences are often more engaging than the celebrities themselves – except for one instance on the top five list.

Some Pre–St. Paddy’s Limericks on The Tonight Show
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=qDatMUhkSQs
My artist friend used to collect those little toasts with rhymes on them – the kind that aren’t really popular anymore. I should send her this clip from The Tonight Show because it’s full of simple rhymes about everyday things like winter boots and Shamrock Shakes. But what really makes it funny is Jimmy Fallon and Steve Higgins pretending to have fancy British accents. They seem very proud of their attempts, and honestly, it’s amusing to watch. It’s all very ‘proper,’ as they’d say.

Pete Holmes Hit a Kid With Another Kid

There’s something really satisfying about watching a comedian perform polished stand-up on a late-night show while making it seem spontaneous, like Pete Holmes did on The Late Show with a story about a painful (and amusing) childhood incident. It’s comforting to see both stand-up and late-night television done so well. It’s almost mesmerizing – like the beginning of Aliens, where everything is running smoothly and you just get to enjoy the characters before the action starts.

“We Do Not Let Rebecca Start Applause Here”
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=Dlp5W1Tm0_0
The interview with Rebecca Ferguson on Late Night With Seth Meyers was surprisingly chaotic and entertaining. Ferguson repeatedly tried to rally the audience for applause, but Meyers gently stopped her each time. She even playfully hid a spoon in Meyers’s desk before the show, which was a fun surprise. The whole interview felt unpredictable, like watching a bird fly into a grocery store – not necessarily a disaster, but definitely keeping everyone on edge. It created a really unique and exciting energy for the show.

Of Course Jennifer Tilly Has Seen a Ghost
https://youtube.com/watch?v=watch?v=C_teNd6go84
Jennifer Tilly has a fascinating life full of stories! From her appearance on The Simpsons and her past as a professional gambler, to a spooky house she avoids because of a resident ghost, she’s experienced a lot. On Watch What Happens Live, they turned her incredible experiences into a fast-paced game where she had to quickly share stories about the famous people – and even ghosts – she’s encountered. It was fun watching her try to fit full anecdotes into just a few seconds per round – it felt like a speed round in therapy!

Harrison Ford Be Fucking (to His Own Movie Soundtracks)

Harrison Ford cemented his status as a beloved icon at the SAG Awards, and he’s been charmingly reserved on late-night talk shows for decades—going all the way back to his appearances with David Letterman. This week on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Ford delivered a particularly memorable performance, playfully scolding the audience for applauding too much. He and Kimmel quickly turned to teasing their friend Woody Harrelson and jokingly comparing Kimmel to Michael J. Fox. Ford even admitted to enjoying the soundtracks from his own movies, likely a nod to the work of John Williams.
