God of War Ragnarok was a big winner at The Game Awards 2022, earning awards for its story, action-adventure gameplay, and Christopher Judge’s performance as Kratos. Although it didn’t win the top prize, Game of the Year, it’s still considered a standout title by many. The original God of War from 2018 remains incredibly popular and influential, so much so that some developers seem to be heavily inspired by it.
A real Deja Vu
A user on X, Black Thunder, noticed a strong resemblance between a battle scene in the 2024 Netflix animation Mahavatar Narasimha and the famous fight between Kratos and Baldur in the 2018 God of War game. The user claims the animation sequence looks nearly identical to the game’s scene, as if it was directly copied.

It’s hard to miss how similar the two scenes are when viewed together. Despite having different characters, art styles, and settings, the fight’s choreography, camera work, and general flow are almost exactly the same. It’s not a direct copy like some other instances – it’s not quite as obvious as the issues with EvenBadWolves/Inkslasher, or the complete recreation seen in the Megabonk rip-off. However, the similarities here are too strong to be accidental.
I was reading the comments on that X post, and someone pointed out this isn’t the first time a game or movie has taken inspiration from somewhere else. They even mentioned an Indian film that had a scene almost exactly like one from a Jackie Chan cartoon! It really makes you wonder if Mahavatar Narasimha is just paying tribute to something it loves, or if it’s maybe a little too similar. It’s definitely open to interpretation, and people are going to have different opinions on whether it’s inspiration or imitation.
