A recent survey shows that instead of taking trips, many American workers are using their vacation time to rest and recover with sleep.
A recent study by Amerisleep.com surveyed over 1,200 Americans about how they spent their vacation time last year. The results showed that more than a third of respondents used some of their paid time off simply to relax at home. Millennials were most likely to do this (43%), followed by Gen X (34%) and Gen Z (33%). Only 20% of baby boomers reported taking time off just to rest.
Recent data shows a shift in how people approach vacation time, with experts linking it to increasing burnout and financial stress. Sleep specialist Rosie Osmun points out that getting adequate rest is no longer seen as a treat, but as a fundamental need. Financial educator Alex Beene views these trends as a concerning indicator of a workforce that is generally pushed too hard.

Rest days and sleep catch-up replacing getaways
A recent survey shows that many Americans are opting to use their vacation time – typically two to three days a year – not for trips or fun, but to simply recover from burnout. According to Kevin Thompson, CEO of 9i Capital Group, the struggle to balance work and family life often leaves people needing to find moments to rest and recharge whenever possible.
The research showed that people with higher incomes were more likely to take time off work simply to rest compared to those earning less than $100,000. As travel becomes more expensive and people face increasing work demands, experts predict more workers will choose to vacation closer to home – opting for staycations instead of traditional trips.
Although people will always enjoy traveling, a recent survey indicates that more and more Americans find their most cherished escapes are simply relaxing at home, moving from their bed to the couch.
