I really admire those filmmakers. When I read the script, it reminded me of the kind of stories they tell. I’m definitely not on their level, but they’ve always been a major inspiration for me.
The movie follows Kevin and Suzie, a couple going through a separation, whose attempt at a marriage-saving trip takes a disastrous turn due to a poorly thought-out plan. This film isn’t similar to American Pie. I considered directing a project that was, but I decided it wasn’t the right fit. I enjoy those kinds of comedies and think I’d be good at them, but this new movie is different – it’s darker, more surprising, and has a bit more of an edge. It’s closer to the types of films I’m personally interested in these days.
