Imagine being Jason Biggs, known for playing Jim in the American Pie movies. Now a dad to two sons, Sid and Lazlo, he’s facing an awkward situation. Years ago, his character famously had… a moment with an apple pie on screen, after being dared by a friend. Now, his kids are getting curious and starting to ask questions about his infamous on-screen actions, and Biggs has to explain it all!
The actor recently discussed a regrettable incident on SiriusXM’s The Julia Cunningham Show. He explained he had to talk to his 11-year-old son, Sid, about it after Sid learned about the situation from someone else.
Our kids kept hearing about the movie American Pie and asking what it was about. I ended up having to explain it to my oldest and even showed him a clip. My wife, Jenny, and I realized this was going to come up, so we decided to address it proactively.
I wanted to have the sex talk, but in my own way. I was thinking about how much I wanted my kids to hear about these things from their friends versus how much I wanted to explain it myself, and it felt urgent because of movies like American Pie coming out at the time.
Jason Biggs recently explained why he’d been hesitant to let his son watch American Pie. He had rejoined his former co-stars – Mena Suvari, Shannon Elizabeth, Alyson Hannigan, and Klein – for a reunion special last summer. Biggs shared that while walking in New York City with his wife and sons, a stranger yelled a crude reference to the movie at them. Luckily, his children didn’t understand what was said. Biggs wondered if he had prepared his son for what he would see when he finally decided to show him the film.
He figured it out, which meant I hadn’t fully controlled how the story unfolded, but I wanted to get his thoughts first. I asked him what he thought would happen, just out of curiosity, and he was right! He was really embarrassed to admit it, but I told him it was okay and showed him what actually happened. He laughed a lot once he saw it, though he was still a little uneasy.
The “Turning Point” in Jason Biggs’ Life

Universal Pictures
This followed an interview with People magazine where Biggs described the infamous apple pie scene as a major moment in his life. After reading the script by Adam Herz, the young actor – who was only 20 at the time – was incredibly nervous about filming the scene and even confirmed with his agent that it was intended to be humorous. However, the crew’s positive reaction during filming reassured him and boosted his confidence.
I remember vividly the moment everyone on set just lost it laughing. That’s when I knew we had something special, a real winner. It was a total turning point for me. From then on, I decided to always trust my gut – if I thought something was funny, we did it. I figured if it bombed, well, that was just part of the process.
