I can’t wait to dive back into the gripping world of true crime with the latest installment from Netflix’s documentary series – American Murder! This time around, they’re unraveling the heart-wrenching story of Gabby Petito, a van life vlogger who met an untimely end at the hands of her fiancé, Brian Laundrie. Let’s join them on this chilling journey to seek justice for Gabby!
The initial installment of this anthology series delved into the Chris Watts case, whereas the subsequent season shifted its attention to the tragic story of Laci Peterson, a victim like herself at the hands of her partner.
In this fresh three-part series, we delve into the intricate aspects of Gabby’s life, her connection with Laundrie, and the startling circumstances surrounding her tragic demise in August 2021. Despite these revelations, many mysteries remain unsolved, as Laundrie took his own life two months later, allegedly following her death.
Instead of “American Murder: Gabby Petito,” we could title it “Gabby Petito’s Case Unraveled: Insights from Family and Friends for a Closer Look” or simply “Gabby Petito Case: A Fresh Perspective.” This title emphasizes the focus on Gabby Petito’s case, highlights the unique insights provided by family and friends, and suggests a more balanced exploration of the events rather than sensationalizing the topic.
There was tension long before Gabby’s murder

As soon as Brian Laundrie and Gabby Petito began their relationship, they professed that it was love from the start. Yet, Laundrie’s dominating attitude soon surfaced to family members and acquaintances. However, Gabby wasn’t just subjected to this behavior from her partner; she also faced similar treatment elsewhere.
In the recently released documentary, text messages suggest that after Gabby relocated to Florida with Laundrie for him to be close to his relatives, she was swiftly excluded.
As a gamer, I’d say it went down like this: In a blink of an eye, I made a hasty move without much planning – just like Gabby did when they suddenly announced their trip to Florida on the same day they confessed about being in a relationship with Brian, and poof! They were gone the next day. Nichole Schmidt, Gabby’s mom, was the one who shared this swift turn of events.
As a gamer speaking about my pals, I’ve learned that their buddy mentioned they were shifting base to Florida since Brian yearned to be close to his folks, Christopher, Roberta, and his sibling Cassie. Initially, it seemed cool to them, as they moved in with his parents. However, the experience turned out to be enjoyable for Gabby at first.

Instead, Nicole expresses that Roberta “began acting less courteous towards her” because she grew accustomed to the situation. It seems that Roberta developed a sense of envy regarding the amount of time her son spent with Gabby.
According to Nicole, “Her jealousy was quite unusual,” as she overheard an incident where Brian’s mother displayed odd behavior at the dinner table. It seemed that the mother became upset because everyone was not paying attention to her pie, and she apparently stopped talking to others that night. Nicole found this behavior extremely peculiar.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “American Murder reveals a string of texts I exchanged with Brian. In the initial message, I said, ‘Brian, your mom’s kinda grumpy, so I’m not sure about our dinner plans.’
Brian explained that it had been the same situation for them growing up, adding that it typically resolves itself on its own, suggesting Gabby should bid farewell to his mother before heading out for grocery shopping.
She mentioned that she was feeling anxious about leaving the room, as if she had done something wrong, and Brian replied with a sigh, indicating his disappointment, saying “It’s time to say goodbye.
“Gabby started to feel very awkward and was not comfortable there,” says Nicole.
Not long after, Nicole reminisces about finding out through a post office letter that Gabby’s mailing address was once again updated to their shared home address.
Gabby clarified that she hadn’t altered the situation; she thought it might be Roberta who was returning home.
Rose says Brian stole Gabby’s ID

In the sunny state of Florida, I struck up a friendship with a fabulous lady named Rose Davis. We hit it off instantly and before we knew it, our connection was as strong as ever.
As a devoted admirer, I’d like to highlight that Rose, a significant figure in the American Murder: Gabby Petito series, recounts her personal insights into Gabby and Brian’s relationship. One chilling instance she narrates is when Brian allegedly took Gabby’s ID card to prevent her from going out, a move that raised red flags for Rose.
The first time Rose encountered Brian, she felt there was an unusual vibe around him. Despite his politeness, he maintained a certain aloofness during their social interactions with Gabby.
When we were a duo, I found our bond incredibly joyful, but once he was absent and only Gabby and I remained, I couldn’t help but notice how he appeared to be rather manipulative in his actions.
One evening, Rose spent an hour and a half on standby for her line dancing outing with Gabby. Before they set off, she confirmed everything was alright, and Gabby expressed regret, stating that she had almost reached home but realized she’d left her ID behind.
When Gabby returned for her wallet, she found out that Brian had taken it, as he explained later on to Rose, because he didn’t want her to leave without him.
Though Brian often behaved in ways that made her upset, there were times when he’d surprise her with thoughtful gestures, causing her to feel grateful and think, ‘I’m not worthy of his kindness.’
In the subsequent year, as Gabby and Brian embarked on a road trip in their van, his conduct deteriorated further, reaching its peak with the well-known police body camera recording of the duo in Moab, Utah.
According to an eyewitness account, Brian was observed striking Gabby. As a result, the authorities conducted a wellness check on them. For the evening, the two were separated, and later, Brian briefly returned home to tidy up a storage space, leaving Gabby by herself in a hotel.
During that period, she contacted her ex-boyfriend Jackson and they caught up on life.
He felt as though she might have wanted someone to confide in following their call, so he casually offered, “If you ever feel like talking again, just reach out. I’m here for it.” This is what he expressed in the documentary on Netflix.
It’s possible that you weren’t aware, but Gabby had actually been preparing to part ways with Brian. According to Jackson, she expressed, “I have an idea. I feel like I want to leave him. I think I should. I just need to decide when is the right time.
At that moment, I found myself questioning, “So, what’s your plan here? It seemed to me that she might have been uncertain about his actions or capabilities.
It seemed like she wanted to escape, yet she wasn’t sure about the steps to take. On August 27, 2021, which was also the day she vanished, Jackson advised her to be cautious and that was the last time he heard from her.
Police predicted what happened
When news of Gaby’s disappearance spread, it quickly became a popular topic online, drawing attention from internet users worldwide who delved into every aspect of the case. The situation escalated further when the Moab video was made available to the public, captivating millions as they tuned in to view the recording.
Instead, let’s say that the extended video from the American case titled “American Murder: Gabby Petito” includes the officer’s forecast of what would eventually transpire in Gabby’s situation.
In the altercation, both Gabby and Brian sustained injuries, yet Gabby seemed deeply troubled, attempting to minimize the incident and taking blame upon herself. On the other hand, Brian maintained a composed demeanor with a cheerful disposition.
Following discussions with Gabby and Brian, two officers engage in a confidential consultation in their vehicle, pondering over the best course of action to take next.
The officer speaking from behind the camera explains, “We’re not allowed to use our own judgment in such cases because frequently, women in danger wish to reconnect with their abuser. This often leads to them receiving increasingly poor treatment and eventually tragic outcomes, including death.
From what I can see, it doesn’t appear that this will lead to him becoming a victim of domestic violence. However, I’m not a fortune teller.” A few weeks later, unfortunately, Brian ended up killing Gabby.
The Burn After Reading letter
The Netflix documentary focuses on some questionable behaviors exhibited by Brian’s parents after Gabby’s death, one of which is that they quickly sought legal representation.
However, among all pieces of evidence found particularly intriguing was a letter penned by Roberta. This letter was uncovered by the FBI during a house raid following Brian’s escape.
In his possessions, they found a letter marked “Burn After Reading,” intended for Brian. The contents read, “I merely wish you to recall that my affection for you remains constant, and I am certain of your enduring love in return.
Regardless of any circumstance, my affection for you remains unwavering. Nothing can separate us or cause a rift between us, for our love is eternal and will endure, no matter where life takes us or the words we exchange.
If you end up in prison, I’ll make a cake with a hidden file inside. In case you need to hide a body, I’ll arrive carrying a shovel and trash bags. If you plan to travel to the moon, I’ll keep a lookout for your return. If you express dislike towards me, I’ll simply replace my internal organs.
She proceeded to cite a passage from Romans 8:38, saying, “Bear in mind that love is something we do, not just something we have or say. It’s more about deeds than words. Look at someone’s actions to determine if they truly care for you – not just their sweet talk.

Consequently, I am absolutely confident that not even death or life itself, nor angels or celestial beings, present or future events, powers above us or below us, anything in the entire universe we can see or imagine – no force from the heavens, no earthly rulers – can ever break our bond of love.
In conclusion, Roberta declared, “No force can drive a wedge between us: no enmity, no hardship, no lack of shelter, no menaces, not even transgression – neither the conceivable nor the inconceivable. Neither time, nor distance, nor vast expanses.
For the very first time, we witness the immediate, uncensored responses from Gabby Petito’s family and friends as they receive her letter in the documentary titled “American Murder: Gabby Petito”.
According to Rose, she finds the letter from Roberta after it’s been burned rather distasteful. Despite her affection for her mother, she would feel quite uneasy if such a letter were addressed to her.
In a statement, Gabby’s stepmother, Tara Petito, expressed, “The first time Joe and I read that letter, we were both left in disbelief and rage. We couldn’t comprehend how she could write such a vile thing. It was utterly repugnant, leaving Nicole feeling nauseous.
Laundrie family beat huge rescue team in search for Brian

Following Brian’s mysterious disappearance in September 2021, law enforcement agencies and the FBI gathered all relevant evidence to prove that he had committed murder against Gabby. Once this evidence was presented, Brian transitioned from being a missing individual to a federal fugitive, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant.
In the true crime documentary, FBI agents Kyle and Loretta Bush make an appearance to detail the wide-ranging manhunt they orchestrated in pursuit of Brian.
Despite focusing their search within the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Florida, Loretta clarified that it wasn’t a simple task.
Over a sprawling 20,000-acre landscape, the FBI teamed up with state, local authorities, and volunteer organizations. Drones, horses, and canine units were deployed in the search for any signs of suspicious activity.
During that period, the park was temporarily shut due to floods, preventing public access. However, upon reopening, it was reported that the Laundrie family intended to visit the park personally in an attempt to locate Brian. The FBI were subsequently notified of this plan.
Law enforcement personnel were present to monitor the developing situation, while Christopher and Roberta ventured out around 7 am. Approximately an hour later during their search, they stumbled upon Brian’s watertight sack.
Approximately 45 minutes later, Brian’s body was discovered. Interestingly, this took place just a mile away from where his vehicle had been left.
It’s surprising that they discovered him so swiftly which caused doubt in many, with Rose remarking, “His parents located his remains. That utterly astounded me. I couldn’t accept it initially. I thought it was a hoax or misinformation.
“I was like, ‘What do you mean? This makes no sense.’”
Towards the conclusion of the documentary titled “American Murder: Gabby Petito”, a message appeared that stated, “So far, no criminal charges have been brought against the Laundrie family.
In the year 2022, the Petito-Schmidt family initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against Robert and Christopher Laundrie. This lawsuit concluded with a settlement in the year 2024. Regarding this matter, the Laundrie family, represented by their legal counsel, chose not to offer any comments.
