America Chavez: The MCU’s Missed Opportunity In Multiverse Saga

As the Marvel Cinematic Universe has expanded, it’s introduced a wider range of heroes, including characters like America Chavez. While she’s not as famous as established heroes like Iron Man or Thor, America Chavez is a popular figure in Marvel comics.

I was so excited when America Chavez burst onto the scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Xochitl Gomez absolutely nailed the role! She was a real highlight of the movie, honestly. But it’s been frustrating seeing absolutely nothing about her since then – not even a quick mention. Considering everything happening in the MCU right now, it feels like a huge missed chance to do something great with her character.

America Chavez Is The Perfect Character For A Multiverse Story

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is now in its Multiverse Saga, following the hugely popular Infinity Saga. However, this new chapter hasn’t been as successful, and even the MCU acknowledged a recent slump in quality, referencing a “low point” in the upcoming film Deadpool and Wolverine.

The movie feels fragmented and doesn’t fully explore the potential of the multiverse. America Chavez, with her ability to travel between universes – a power showcased in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – could have been key to tying everything together.

Despite the Multiverse Saga almost being finished, the franchise hasn’t yet found a way to meaningfully include America Chavez. Introducing her in the Doctor Strange sequel seemed to suggest she’d play a bigger role going forward, but that hasn’t happened yet.

Considering the film came out in 2022, it felt like the franchise changed direction by the end of 2023. Although the overarching Multiverse Saga is still happening, Kang is no longer the primary villain, and his storyline heavily relied on the idea of the multiverse. If Kang had been more present, America Chavez could have been more involved in finding him.

It just feels like a missed chance that America Chavez isn’t more involved in the fight against Doctor Doom. With a hero who can travel between universes, it’s disappointing she doesn’t play a larger role in this multiverse story.

America Chavez Is One Of The Better New Additions To The MCU

Even putting aside the storyline involving the Multiverse Saga, it was a misstep not to include America Chavez in future plans. She’s quickly become one of the most compelling characters introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe since Avengers: Endgame.

What’s really compelling about this character is that she comes from a completely different universe than everyone else in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making her unique. She’s also very easy to root for, and audiences quickly feel for her. Most importantly, her courage when facing the powerful Scarlet Witch shows she has the potential to become a truly significant hero.

The story also hints at a future for America. We find out her parents disappeared into another dimension due to a portal accidentally created by her as a child. A story about her searching for them could be really compelling.

When Will We See America Chavez Again?

It’s unlikely we’ll see a movie or show focused solely on America Chavez anytime soon, and it’s uncertain if the character will return. Despite this, Xochitl Gomez, the actress who played America Chavez, continues to be involved with the Marvel franchise, frequently attending premieres for new releases.

The upcoming Young Avengers project seems like the most likely place we’ll see more of America Chavez. Rumors about the show have circulated for years, but the ending of The Marvels strongly suggested it’s happening. In that movie, Ms. Marvel started building a team by recruiting Kate Bishop.

In the comic books, America Chavez is frequently part of the Young Avengers team and develops feelings for Kate Bishop. While the films probably won’t explore that romantic connection – the movie version of America is much younger than the comic book character – we might still see her join the team in future movies.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has introduced several potential Young Avengers, including Ms. Marvel, Kate Bishop, Skaar, Kid Loki, Patriot, Speed, Wiccan, and Cassie Lang. These characters, along with America Chavez, could eventually form a new team.
