It appears Amazon has canceled its planned Lord of the Rings online game. This decision comes after significant job cuts, particularly within the company’s game development departments.
Okay, so things are pretty rough over at Amazon. They’ve had to let a lot of people go, and it seems like they’re really pushing hard into AI, which is a bummer for those affected. And unfortunately, that’s hit New World hard. They’re basically putting the game on hold – no more updates are coming, and they’ve announced it’ll be shutting down completely in 2026. It’s sad to see a game go like that, but it looks like Amazon is betting big on AI instead.
Amazon’s planned Lord of the Rings online game is facing setbacks due to recent company layoffs. Ashleigh Amrine, a former Senior Gameplay Engineer at Amazon Games, shared on LinkedIn that the development team working on the game was impacted.
What Happened With Amazon Games?

I’ve been watching Amazon try to break into gaming for a while now, ever since they started Amazon Games back in 2012. Honestly, it hasn’t really gone their way. They had a bit of a splash with New World, but even that lost steam pretty quickly. It felt like they couldn’t keep players engaged with new content, and people drifted back to games they already knew and loved.
Amazon Luna, Amazon’s game streaming service, is continuing for now, though its future is uncertain, especially after Google Stadia shut down. Microsoft’s strong commitment to cloud gaming with Xbox could encourage Amazon to keep Luna going.
It’s disappointing to see The Lord of the Rings MMO shut down, but the real tragedy is the many people who have lost their jobs because of it. The decision to switch to AI seems to be motivated by cost-cutting, not improving the game, and it’s unclear if this change will even be successful. Everyone at TopMob wishes those affected find new opportunities quickly.
