Amazon Cuts Hit Video Game Division, Reducing Work On MMOs

Amazon is cutting over 14,000 jobs from its corporate workforce, according to a recent Bloomberg report. The layoffs will impact many areas of the company, particularly its gaming division.

A recent memo obtained by Bloomberg indicates that most of Amazon’s job cuts will affect its offices in Irvine and San Diego. While the exact number isn’t known, the cuts impact around 14,000 positions, particularly within the company’s publishing division. Amazon plans to scale back development on large, expensive games and massively multiplayer online games (MMOs).

Steve Boom, who leads Audio, Twitch, and Games at Amazon, explained in an email that making the decision was tough, even though their game development teams had achieved some successes with major titles.

We’re proud of the successful high-quality games we’ve created ourselves, but we’ve made the tough choice to stop working on large-scale, ongoing online games – known as MMOs – at Amazon Game Studios. This means we’re reducing the size of our teams in Irvine and San Diego, and also within our publishing group.

Amazon has two major online role-playing games: Lost Ark and New World. While both received mixed reviews, they represent significant efforts for the company. New World, released in 2021, was Amazon’s first attempt at creating a game and is now playable on both PC and consoles. Lost Ark, which came out in 2022, is currently only available on PC and is published by Amazon.

Sources say the company was developing online multiplayer games based on Lord of the Rings and Tomb Raider, but it seems those projects have been cancelled.

This announcement follows Amazon’s decision two years ago to eliminate around 100 positions within its gaming department. At the time, Amazon Games VP Christoph Hartmann stated in April 2023 that the company planned to keep investing in its game development and expected its teams to expand as projects moved forward.
