Amanda Seyfried’s Magic Trick Won Late Night This Week

Here we go again, Agent Cooper. Jimmy Fallon is promoting another tech company. On December 8th, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appeared on The Tonight Show, and Fallon seemed very enthusiastic about the new technology and Altman’s suggestion that it could even help with raising children. It felt a lot like when Paris Hilton gave Fallon a Bored Ape NFT. It makes you wonder what Altman thinks about the idea that reality might be a simulation.

On his show this week, Stephen Colbert expressed concern that the current excitement around AI might be a financial bubble, potentially leading to a serious economic downturn – he actually delivered this message silently to the camera. During an interview with CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin, Colbert took a more critical stance on AI than other hosts, pressing Sorkin with several follow-up questions. He even challenged seemingly harmless anecdotes, like asking Sorkin to reveal the cost of an expensive taxi ride. Colbert is skilled at creating a real back-and-forth conversation with his guests, a dynamic that may become rarer in late-night television. This week’s best late-night moments are detailed below.

Amy Sedaris’s Craft Corner

Okay, let me tell you, I have a soft spot for delightfully odd guests on late-night shows, and Amy Sedaris absolutely delivered. She didn’t just bring props onto Seth Meyers’ show, she brought a whole collection of crafts…and then made Seth price them for a rummage sale! It was wonderfully weird. Seriously, what delightful little trinket would you want? I’m personally eyeing that penny bookmark. A quick note to the teens helping her make these – you might want to invest in some good respirators, just saying, glitter lung is a real threat!

“Give Me a Break, Higgins!”

The “Pup Quiz” segment on The Tonight Show is hilarious. No matter how calm a celebrity usually is, being covered in puppies is guaranteed to throw them off! Millie Bobby Brown was so overwhelmed during one round that she jokingly pleaded with announcer Steve Higgins for a break. But Higgins didn’t give her one! He clearly enjoys playing the villainous game show host, much like his character on 30 Rock. He’s really good at playfully tormenting people – notice how he smugly tells Fallon “You lost” even when Brown answers a question correctly. It’s a surprisingly mischievous performance.

The Daily Show Gets Timey-Wimey

Jon Stewart recently highlighted the similarities between the Iraq War and the current situation in Venezuela, using a throwback clip from The Daily Show and bringing back Rob Corddry for a nostalgic touch. The segment initially felt like a joke referencing the movie Hot Tub Time Machine – a feeling amplified for those who, like me, actually enjoyed the sequel. But the real highlight was seeing Corddry effortlessly make Stewart laugh. His playful teasing of Stewart’s new show, The Problem With Jon Stewart, was a perfect way to end the bit.

Taylor Swift Will Be Stephen Colbert’s Ghostwriter

Taylor Swift has appeared on three out of the four major late-night talk shows this year, leaving fans wondering if she’ll also visit Jimmy Kimmel. She recently chatted with Stephen Colbert on The Late Show about her Eras Tour documentary. Colbert playfully pressed her to reveal her five favorite songs, but she was hesitant. After some prodding, she admitted “All Too Well (10 Minute Version)” and “Mirrorball” would make the cut, but didn’t offer any more details. Colbert joked about his plans falling apart, and Swift surprisingly offered him advice on dealing with enthusiastic fans: she suggested he write a thrilling mystery novel, even outlining the plot for him. Clearly impressed, Colbert abandoned his song list and started taking notes on their potential best-selling book collaboration.

Amanda Seyfried Is Pure Magic

I previously suggested the actors in Now You See Me: Now You Don’t could have showcased more magic during their promotional appearances, and I still believe that. It was great to see Amanda Seyfried actually perform a coin trick on Late Night With Seth Meyers after I shared that thought. However, everything leading up to that moment was surprisingly charming. Seyfried is clearly enthusiastic about her new film, The Testament of Ann Lee, and her passion is contagious. But the most captivating part of the interview was when Seyfried genuinely wondered if one of her farm ducks had been frightened when a fox attacked it. It was a very human, unexpected moment – something you wouldn’t expect in a typical movie promotion. You can even see Seth Meyers pause, a little surprised by the turn the conversation took. But I’m really glad it happened.
