Disney has chosen Amanda Seyfried, known for her role in Mean Girls, to play Cinderella in a new movie.
This movie isn’t a remake of the classic Cinderella story. It’s an animated film called Steps that tells the story from the perspective of the stepsisters.
The upcoming animated film Steps, from director Alyce Tzue (a Student Academy Award winner) and John Ripa (known for Raya and the Last Dragon), has added an Academy Award-nominated actress to its voice cast. She joins Ali Wong (Beef) and Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All at Once) in the film, which is produced by Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing. Steps is scheduled to debut on Netflix in 2026.
Director Tzue explained to Tudum that Amanda Seyfried has a talent for creating characters that feel both unique and real, which was essential for reimagining a classic like Cinderella. They aimed to develop a Cinderella for today – one with imperfections and realistic ways of dealing with challenges – and Seyfried instantly grasped that vision. Tzue described Seyfried’s performance as both funny and deeply moving, ultimately portraying Cinderella as genuinely human.
What Is Steps About?
Most people are familiar with the story of Cinderella – a young woman forced into servitude by her cruel stepmother and stepsisters after her father dies. She finds love with a prince after attending a ball in disguise. Recently, the story was reimagined in the latest season of Bridgerton, where Benedict Bridgerton falls for Sophie Baek in a similar way, at his mother’s masquerade ball.
As a big film fan, I was really excited when Kenneth Branagh tackled this classic story in 2015 with a live-action remake. Lily James absolutely shone as Cinderella, and Richard Madden – who I loved in Game of Thrones – was perfectly cast as the Prince.
Netflix is offering a fresh take on the Cinderella story, this time focusing on the often-villainized stepsisters. The premise challenges viewers to reconsider everything they thought they knew about them.
Lilith gets the blame when something goes wrong at the Royal Ball – she’s accused of stealing a magic wand! In the chaos, she accidentally turns her sister into a frog and a not-so-nice girl takes control of the kingdom. Now, Lilith needs to work with Cinderella and a surprisingly charming troll to fix things, save the kingdom, and show everyone that even those labeled as villains deserve a happy ending.
