As a seasoned movie reviewer who’s seen more films than I can count on one hand (and a few toes), I must say that “Pushpa 2: The Rule” is an absolute blockbuster that leaves me utterly speechless… and slightly envious of those who get to experience it for the first time. With its jaw-dropping four-day weekend gross of $92.5 million, it’s safe to say that this film has set a new standard for Indian cinema.
The Rule” by Mythri Movie Makers, starring Allu Arjun, earned a staggering $92.5 million during its first four days of release, as per Comscore’s data. This places it as the third highest-grossing film worldwide, trailing only behind “Moana 2” and “Wicked.
The upcoming film titled “Pushpa 2” is a follow-up to Sukumar’s successful 2021 release “Pushpa: The Rise,” which made approximately $46 million at the box office. In this continuation, directed once again by Sukumar, Allu Arjun returns as the daring red sandalwood smuggler, Pushpa Raj. Having previously embarrassed Superintendent of Police Bhanwar Singh Shekhawat, Pushpa now wields more authority in the criminal underworld. As his influence expands, he encounters obstacles, including the vindictive Shekhawat and rival smuggler Mangalam Srinu.
On December 5th, Thursday, the movie made its debut and grossed a global opening-day revenue of approximately $34.6 million, outperforming the Indian opening-day record of $26 million held by S.S. Rajamouli’s “RRR.” The film was released in 38 different regions worldwide, earning $9.3 million in North America, with $4.8 million generated during its three-day weekend. Currently, it stands at No. 4 on the North American box office chart. Moreover, “Pushpa 2” effortlessly surpassed the previous record holder for 2024, “Kalki 2898 AD,” which had an opening-day revenue of $21 million.
As of now, ‘Pushpa 2’ ranks third among the top Indian box office earners of 2024, following ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ ($141 million) and ‘Stree 2’ ($103 million). If its current pace continues, ‘Pushpa 2’ is poised to take over as the highest-grossing Indian film of the year in just a few days. Additionally, the movie has earned $1.4 million in the global Imax box office across 16 different markets. In India specifically, it made $650,000 from 31 Imax screens, which is the biggest opening for any local language film in Imax screens this year and the fourth-highest Imax opening ever in the market.
In the first week of release, Disney’s “Moana 2” raked in an impressive $155.7 million globally, with $52 million coming from North America alone. This brings its overall earnings to a staggering $600 million. Meanwhile, Universal’s “Wicked” made $61.7 million worldwide during the same period, with $34.8 million in North America. Its total earnings now stand at an impressive $455.5 million.
As I pen my latest movie review, I find myself reflecting on the global box office battle between two titans: “Gladiator II” and “Her Story.” In a fierce fight for dominance, “Gladiator II” claimed fourth place worldwide with an impressive $29.4 million weekend haul, bringing its total earnings to a staggering $368.4 million.
