As a seasoned gamer with years of Nintendo-centric adventures under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and skepticism regarding the upcoming Switch 2. The leaks and rumors circulating are like breadcrumbs leading to a tantalizing secret, each one offering a glimpse into what could be the next chapter in my gaming journey.
A retailer is already selling supposed accessories for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 (or its unnamed version), which is expected to be officially announced in a few months. However, there are significant questions and caveats to consider.
Alibaba currently offers screen protectors that are slightly larger than what’s needed for the current Nintendo Switch (7 inches for the OLED version), hinting at possible size differences in the rumored Switch 2 model, which is speculated to have an 8-inch screen. Additionally, a case labeled as “Switch 2” is also up for sale on Alibaba, featuring a design that mirrors the existing model’s form factor, reinforcing theories about the potential similarity in shape between the new and old versions of the Switch.
Prior to the recent leak of what’s claimed to be the new Joy-Cons for the Switch 2, there were hints pointing towards a more user-friendly and comfortable design.
In other words, companies that produce accessories might receive advance information about upcoming product releases to prepare their products accordingly. However, it’s not clear if this is the case here or if any of these products have been officially licensed by Nintendo. Companies are allowed to make educated guesses and speculate in anticipation of a significant product launch. As Kotaku suggests, these listings could be temporary placeholders, waiting for official announcements from Nintendo.
By the conclusion of March 2025, it’s expected that Nintendo will formally unveil the latest version of their console, known as the Switch 2, as this marks the ending of their fiscal year.
Although the specifications for The Switch 2 are yet to be finalized, Digital Foundry speculates that it might incorporate a custom Nvidia T239 processor. Nintendo has confirmed that its successor will support backward compatibility, meaning existing games can be played on the new system. Additionally, Nintendo Switch Online service will continue on the new console. At least one game has already been revealed for the upcoming device.
