After years of waiting, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 is here! The game puts you in Seattle, where you’ll unravel a web of secrets as the city’s vampire factions prepare for war. One of the first things you’ll do is choose which vampire clan you belong to, and that choice will determine your starting powers and how you play the game.
What’s the difference between clans?
Each clan functions like a character class, offering unique passive and active skills. Clans specialize in different power types, and as you unlock more abilities for a clan, you’ll also unlock new cosmetic outfits for them.
The clan you initially pick will give you access to certain abilities right away, but you’ll be able to learn abilities from other clans as you progress through the story. Keep in mind that your starting clan also determines your permanent passive ability, and you won’t be able to change that to a passive ability from another clan.
You can learn skills from other clans by earning special currencies through Blood Resonance events that happen around the city. Once you’ve unlocked a skill, you’ll need to spend skill points to use it. The less friendly you are with a clan, the more skill points their abilities will cost. Completing quests for clan leaders will improve your relationship with them and reduce those costs.
Brujah
Mastery Rating: Normal
Clan Affinities: Celerity, Presence, and Potence
Brujah vampires excel at aggressive, direct combat, focusing on quickly overpowering opponents. They gain a temporary damage increase after each feeding, making them hit even harder. As they progress, Brujah gain skills that further enhance their combat prowess, including abilities to effectively fight multiple enemies. If you enjoy being right in the middle of the action, the Brujah clan is an excellent choice.
Tremere
Mastery Rating: Normal
Clan Affinities: Dominate and Blood Sorcery
In Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, the Tremere clan acts as the mage class, giving players access to strong abilities fueled by blood. They also have a useful passive skill: enemies defeated after you feed on them simply vanish, helping you avoid unwanted attention. As you progress, you’ll unlock potent spells like Blood Curse, which makes an enemy explode when damaged, and Blood Salvo, allowing you to create and telekinetically throw blood daggers.
Banu Haqim
Mastery Rating: Hard
Clan Affinities: Celerity, Blood Sorcery, Obfuscate
The Banu Haqim wield magic focused on stealth and swift, silent takedowns, allowing them to move unseen in the darkness. Their powers begin with a brief period of silence after feeding, and grow to enhance their nighttime movement and ability to kill without being noticed. They can silence enemies – both their weapons and cries – with the Mute ability, eliminating them discreetly. The Split Second ability lets them briefly slow time, enabling instant repositioning.
Ventrue
Mastery Rating: Easy
Clan Affinities: Dominate and Presence
The Vantrue are a clan that combines trickery with strong defenses. They can withstand attacks while also confusing their opponents. By feeding on enemies, they gain increased damage resistance. Their powers let them eliminate threats—both humans and vampires—without directly engaging. Terminal Decree makes a human enemy defeat themselves, or forces a vampire to drop their weapon and become vulnerable. Possession allows you to take complete control of another being and order them to attack your enemies.
Lasombra
Mastery Rating: Hard
Clan Affinities: Dominate, Potence, and Oblivion
Lasombra vampires are masters of darkness, using shadows to ambush opponents and instill fear in anyone who witnesses their power. Their abilities enhance this – after feeding, they become harder to detect with Shadow Cloak. Shadow Step lets them instantly teleport between shadows, and Glimpse of Oblivion causes enemies to panic and run. The Lasombra embody the traditional vampire archetype, blending darkness with psychological terror.
Toreador
Mastery Rating: Normal
Clan Affinities: Celerity and Presence
The Toreador is a fast and alluring vampire clan that dominates opponents. They gain speed by feeding on others. Known for their seductive powers, Toreador can use abilities like Entrancing Kiss to make enemies fight alongside them, or Beckon to draw foes to a previous location. If you enjoy the romantic side of vampires, the Toreador clan might be perfect for you.
So which clan is best?
Because you can learn most skills from any clan, your starting clan isn’t super important. It mostly depends on which passive ability you like best while gaining energy from enemies, and which skills you want to unlock early on.
We suggest playing as the Tremere clan. Their main strength is a passive ability that makes enemies vanish after you feed, which greatly reduces the risk of revealing the existence of vampires and getting caught while sneaking around. Plus, they quickly gain access to Blood Curse, a powerful ability that makes enemies explode when damaged. This is fantastic for dealing with both large groups of enemies and tough bosses, giving you a strong advantage from the very beginning.
