The hugely popular sci-fi series Stargate SG-1 is coming to Netflix next month. Originally released in 1997, the show is both a spin-off and a sequel to a beloved sci-fi favorite. Running for ten seasons, Stargate SG-1 is considered incredibly influential in the genre and deserves more recognition. Many fans consider it one of the best military sci-fi shows ever made.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I remember being so excited when Stargate SG-1 premiered on July 27, 1997! It was a direct continuation of the awesome 1994 movie Stargate, picking up the story a year later. The show follows SG-1, a team of soldiers sent through the Stargate to basically explore the universe, find potential allies, and, crucially, locate anything that could help protect Earth from alien enemies. I originally watched it on Showtime back in the late ’90s, but it eventually moved over to the Sci-Fi Channel, where it ran until its fantastic finale in 2007. It really was an iconic series!
Over its ten seasons, Stargate SG-1 received more than two dozen Saturn Award nominations, winning six. The show featured popular actors like Richard Dean Anderson (known as MacGyver), Michael Shanks, Claudia Black, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. While professional critics haven’t provided enough reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes score, fans overwhelmingly love the series, giving it a 90% rating. This demonstrates how many viewers connected with this beloved military science fiction show. Here’s what the show is about:
Stargate SG-1 centers on a top-level U.S. Air Force team who use an ancient alien device called the Stargate to travel to other planets. The team – led by Colonel Jack O’Neill and including archaeologist Daniel Jackson, scientist Samantha Carter, and the alien Teal’c – explores new worlds, meets different civilizations, and protects Earth from dangerous enemies like the Goa’uld, a parasitic race.
‘Stargate’ Is Being Rebooted at Amazon

Showtime/Sci Fi
The Stargate franchise had been inactive since 2010, with only a short web series in 2018, and seemed to be finished. However, it was recently announced that Amazon will be reviving the series for Prime Video with a new show, also called Stargate. Excitingly, some people who worked on the original shows will be involved, including Emmerich and Dean Devlin. Martin Gero, who has a strong history with the franchise – having worked on SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe – will be the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner, suggesting the future of Stargate is in capable hands.
According to Gero, the new Stargate series on Amazon isn’t a sequel or a complete restart of the franchise. It’s a fresh story set within the existing Stargate universe, offering a bold new direction for fans while respecting the show’s history.
