I’m so excited! One of my all-time favorite sci-fi shows, Stargate SG-1, is coming to Netflix next month. It originally premiered way back in 1997, and it’s special because it’s both a spin-off and a sequel to a truly iconic sci-fi movie. Honestly, with ten seasons under its belt, it’s a show that really shaped the genre, and I feel like it doesn’t get talked about enough. If you haven’t experienced the amazing world of Stargate SG-1 yet, you’re in for a treat!
First airing on July 27, 1997, Stargate SG-1 began as a continuation of the 1994 science fiction film Stargate. The show picks up a year after the movie’s events, following the adventures of SG-1 – a team of soldiers from Earth who travel the galaxy. Their mission is to find weapons and build alliances to protect Earth from alien dangers. The series originally aired on Showtime in the late 1990s, then moved to the Sci-Fi Channel in 2002, where it continued until its finale in 2007.
Over its ten seasons, Stargate SG-1 received more than twenty nominations for Saturn Awards and won six. The show featured popular actors like Richard Dean Anderson (known as MacGyver), Michael Shanks, Claudia Black, Amanda Tapping, and Christopher Judge. While professional critics haven’t provided enough reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes score, fans overwhelmingly love the series, giving it a 90% rating. This demonstrates how many people connected with this beloved military science fiction show. Here’s what the show is about:
Stargate SG-1 centers around a top-level U.S. Air Force team who use an ancient alien device called the Stargate to travel to other planets. The team, led by Colonel Jack O’Neill and including archaeologist Daniel Jackson, scientist Samantha Carter, and the alien Teal’c, explore new worlds, meet different civilizations, and protect Earth from dangerous enemies, including the parasitic Goa’uld.
‘Stargate’ Is Being Rebooted at Amazon

Showtime/Sci Fi
The Stargate franchise had been inactive since 2010, with only a short web series in 2018, and seemed to be finished. However, it was recently announced that Amazon will be reviving Stargate with a new series for Prime Video, also called Stargate. Excitingly, some familiar faces from the original series are involved, including Emmerich and Dean Devlin. Martin Gero, who worked on SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis, and Stargate Universe, will be the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner, ensuring the franchise is in capable hands.
According to Gero, the new Stargate series on Amazon isn’t a sequel or a complete restart of the franchise. It’s a fresh story set within the existing Stargate universe, designed to offer a bold and enjoyable experience for longtime fans while standing on its own.
