The movie’s release is almost here, but many details remain a mystery. We don’t yet know which teams beyond the Fantastic Four, Wakandans, Avengers, X-Men, and New Avengers will appear. Plus, even within those main groups, the exact lineup of characters is still being finalized.
Let’s talk about the New Avengers, a team first seen in Thunderbolts. Right now, Val is partially in charge, but it’s still unclear who will lead them into battle in Avengers: Doomsday. We can expect the team’s members to change, particularly as the boundaries between heroes and villains become less clear. When deciding on a leader, it’s important to consider their power and abilities.
Ant-Man Is the Much-Needed Veteran
Ant-Man has evolved significantly since he first appeared. Initially seen as the Avengers’ comic relief, he proved his worth by becoming Giant-Man and playing a key role in the fight against Thanos, earning the team’s respect. He even managed to defeat Kang the Conqueror, preventing him from unleashing chaos across the multiverse.
Lang, having fought alongside the main Avengers, has a knack for keeping the team united and acting as a relatable presence. His understanding of the Multiverse and time travel would be incredibly valuable facing this new threat. While he can change size, his overall power level isn’t as high as some other candidates for the New Avengers.
Captain America Could Switch Teams
I’ve always been a huge fan of the original, independent Avengers – the team that wasn’t controlled by any government. But things are a little confusing now, as several different groups are claiming to be the Avengers. I especially admire Sam Wilson’s version. He doesn’t have the super-soldier strength, but honestly, he’s so incredibly agile, well-trained, and with those wings, he’s a force to be reckoned with – he more than makes up for it!
Wilson has strong allies, like the new Falcon. With powerful teammates such as U.S. Agent and Winter Soldier, there’s a real chance Captain America will change sides in the fight against Doom and lead a different type of superhero team. While he doesn’t have superpowers, he’d be a great leader.
Winter Soldier Has the Experience With the Thunderbolts
Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, is now a key member of the New Avengers. Many believe he’s become their leader, particularly because of his experience with the original Avengers team. He’s a brilliant strategist and one of the most formidable super-soldiers ever created. While he never officially became Captain America, he still embodies the spirit of that role.
Now that Sam Wilson is leading the Avengers, Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, could potentially step up as a new type of Captain America – a leader who helps fill the gap. Bucky’s been working to make amends for his past, and he’d be a great symbol for the team’s future. However, he isn’t as powerful as some of the more cosmic villains they face.
Black Panther Is a Resourceful Leader
Shuri is now responsible for Wakanda’s defense, but she offers much more than just advanced technology. She combines a brilliant intellect with the courage of a warrior, and has already helped Wakanda thrive. It seems she’s ready to take on a larger role, potentially joining the Avengers as a key player.
Although Shuri isn’t closely connected to the New Avengers, her existing relationship with Winter Soldier could lead her to join them. While she might not be as strong as some other fighters, she’s incredibly intelligent and resourceful. She’s not used to working as part of a team, but her experience as a princess should help her adapt.
Mr. Fantastic Has Leadership Experience Already
Similar to Shuri, Mr. Fantastic is incredibly intelligent, ranking among the smartest heroes in the Multiverse. But Reed Richards also understands the different realities within it, having traveled here from another one. Plus, he’s a natural leader, proven by his ability to lead The Fantastic Four. While he’s new to this specific world, he’s skilled at adapting and using a fresh perspective to his benefit.
Reed Richards, also known as Mr. Fantastic, is still exploring the full extent of his abilities. Having already teamed up with the New Avengers for a short time, it’s natural he’s taking a leading role in the current conflict, especially considering his personal connection to both the battle and Doctor Doom.
Shang-Chi Wields Unbelievable Power
Shang-Chi is incredibly powerful, making it difficult to picture anyone defeating him. He’s learned leadership skills from his father, and through intense combat training, he’s become a skilled warrior. He should be able to easily handle a challenge like Doctor Doom, who relies on technology and weaponry.
Shang-Chi has distanced himself from running the Ten Rings and isn’t accustomed to teamwork. He now appears to be aligning more with the core Avengers. Despite this, he could be a valuable addition to a new Avengers team, bringing a focused and strategic approach to combat.
Doctor Strange Has the Skills and Knowledge to Lead
For a long time, Doctor Strange guarded the New York Sanctum, giving him an understanding of the universe that almost no one possesses. Facing a powerful enemy like Doctor Doom, Strange’s experience and past collaborations with the Avengers would make him a formidable asset and a valuable leader for a new team of heroes.
Doctor Strange can be difficult to understand, but when it comes to sheer power, few can rival him. We haven’t seen the full extent of what he’s capable of yet. He operates independently and carries a dark side within him, which makes him a potential threat to both his enemies and those who would consider him an ally.
Photon is Both Powerful and Already Used to Being on a Team
Monica Rambeau possesses incredible abilities, and she’s probably capable of even more if she fully developed them. By the end of The Marvels, she found herself in a different universe, starting to team up with the X-Men. These adventures across different universes are proving to be incredibly helpful.
The New Avengers are looking for a powerful hero with experience in cosmic-level threats, and Photon fits the bill. Not only is she incredibly powerful, but her military background and strong leadership skills could help guide the often-unstable New Avengers team in a more positive direction. She’s a standout member who has the potential to really make a difference.
Thor Is the Longest Serving Original Avenger
Though Thor has been around for a very long time, he hasn’t always been the best leader. He’s often let Captain America and Iron Man take charge, and he even gave up his throne as king because he didn’t enjoy ruling.
Despite his past mistakes, the New Avengers could give him an opportunity to make things right. This is especially true now that he’s worried his daughter, Love, might be in danger. Thor, possessing god-like power, is one of the few heroes capable of facing Doctor Doom without hesitation.
The Sentry Is the Nuclear Option, But Has a Strong Heart
Sentry is a very unpredictable person, which would make him a poor choice as a leader. While he shares a history with the New Avengers, it hasn’t always been good – he’s actually been their biggest threat. Despite this, he can be genuinely loyal and kind, especially when he’s simply acting as Bob.
When Bob Reynolds transforms into The Sentry, he’s easily more powerful than Doctor Doom. However, the unstable side of The Sentry that remains afterward would be frightening. While neither The Sentry nor Bob are natural leaders, if the New Avengers just need maximum power in a fight, this might be the best option.
