As a long-time admirer of Alisyn Camerota‘s work, it’s bittersweet to see her depart from CNN after such a significant chapter in both her professional and personal life. Her tenure at the network was marked by a unique blend of toughness and empathy that made her interviews with newsmakers not only informative but also engaging for viewers.
Alisyn Camerota, well-known for her stability on screen and significant role at CNN during the initial term of the Trump presidency, announced her departure from the network owned by Warner Bros. Discovery through a post on social media on Sunday.
Exciting Times Ahead! I’ve spent years honing my craft as a news anchor at CNN, and now it’s time for me to embark on a new chapter. Don’t miss my farewell broadcast this afternoon at 4:50p (et). Stay tuned with us for updates about what lies ahead! #NewBeginnings #LastDayAtCNN
I began my tenure at CNN in the year 2014, following a significant period at Fox News Channel. Over six years, I took up the role of co-anchor on “New Day,” a prominent morning show that was initially envisioned by a former leadership team headed by ex-CNN chief Jeff Zucker, to challenge not only MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” but also long-standing morning news programs like NBC’s “Today” and ABC’s “Good Morning America” on broadcast television.
Her departure coincides with speculations that CNN and its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, might implement further layoffs. This is due to their efforts to redirect resources towards digital content under the leadership of current CEO Mark Thompson, as they adapt to the changing landscape of news consumption.
Camerota collaborated with Chris Cuomo, who established a more assertive yet caring persona than morning television had previously showcased, attracting viewers as CNN reported on Trump. Notably, Camerota gained recognition not just for her hard-hitting interviews with influential figures, but also for displaying genuine compassion on screen when necessary.
In 2019, during her time on ‘New Day’, Camerota expressed that people seem to be drawn to us because they want accountability. People appreciate it when we challenge others, as if we’re making them face tough questions. Sometimes, we may need to interrupt someone who’s going off topic with their arguments, but our audience expects us to step in and cut through the noise. Camerota stated that she doesn’t struggle with this.
She has written two books during her time at CNN. Her debut novel, “Amanda Wakes Up,” was set at a large TV-news operation, and her 2024 memoir, “Combat Love,” told the harrowing story of an unstable upbringing.
Lately, she hasn’t appeared much on the screen. This is because her spouse, Tim Lewis, passed away in July following a hard fight against pancreatic cancer. In September, she disclosed that she had been spending time looking after him during his last days.
As a passionate film enthusiast, I must admit that, since parting ways with “New Day” in 2021, Alisyn Camerota has found herself in a dynamic role at CNN. The network seems to be experimenting with various approaches, as she’s been seen co-anchoring daytime hours, hosting primetime shows, and contributing to special reports for the weekend series “The Whole Story.” It’s an exciting time for Camerota and CNN, as they continue to innovate their programming schedule.
