Alien: Earth is set within the Alien universe, but it introduces a completely new set of characters, separate from those fans are already familiar with. The story unfolds in 2120, 16 years after the happenings in Alien: Covenant (2017) and two years before the original Alien (1979). Because the series is set in a previously unexplored year and, notably, on Earth – a location rarely seen in the Alien franchise – it required a fresh cast of characters.
The story primarily focuses on characters connected to Prodigy, one of the five powerful Corporations controlling the world. Prodigy is led by Boy Kavalier, a brilliant young man fixated on maintaining his youth. Boy Kavalier is the creator of the Lost Boys – a group of Hybrids formed by transferring the minds of children with terminal illnesses into artificial bodies. Other important figures include Arthur and Dame Sylvia, scientists who closely work with the Hybrid children, and Kirsh, a Synthetic who handles many tasks, such as managing the lab and caring for the kids. Atom Eins is a puzzling character who has been around since the start of the series, but his background remained largely unknown until the season’s final episode.
The Season Finale Reveals that Atom Eins Is the First Synthetic Boy Kavalier Ever Made
Atom Eins, portrayed by Adrian Edmondson, has been a noticeable figure in the world of Alien: Earth from the start. He’s a very professional man, always well-dressed and focused on getting things done. While polite, he isn’t shy about sharing his views. For instance, when Joe Hermit attempts to leave his job at Prodigy to avoid discussing his sister, Marcy (who transformed into the Hybrid Wendy), Atom calmly points out that Prodigy covered his lung transplant and life-saving surgery. Leaving would mean being billed for that very costly procedure.
Although Atom Eins appeared frequently throughout the series, not much was revealed about his background. He consistently remained in the background, prepared to handle crucial tasks for Prodigy. He occasionally shared his advice and thoughts with Boy Kavalier. When Boy Kavalier took the Eye from the lab, isolating it from the other specimens, Atom immediately advised against it. He emphasized that keeping them together was the most secure method of containment and that separation could allow one or more to escape and cause harm. Boy Kavalier naturally ignored this warning, but Atom consistently offered his expert opinions, even when they weren’t heeded.
Because of his demeanor, many fans guessed that Atom was a Synthetic (often called a Synth). He simply doesn’t seem to display emotions in a way that feels natural. Interestingly, even Kirsh, who is definitely a Synth, appears to have a wider range of emotional expression than Atom. Atom is very stoic, always stands incredibly straight and stiff, and is much more formal than anyone else at Prodigy. He feels somewhat unnatural around humans, but it wasn’t until the episode, “The Real Monsters,” that fans officially learned he is, in fact, a Synth.
The show also provides viewers with a detailed history of Atom Eins. Boy Kavalier shares a story about his past with the Lost Boys, which clarifies several things – both why Boy Kavalier acts the way he does, and what his relationship is to Atom. Here’s how Boy Kavalier tells it:
Growing up, my father struggled with alcohol. He was part of a family history of difficult men, each one worse than the last. But despite that, I was born – a bright kid, maybe even a genius, with the potential to achieve great things. The problem was, my father was consumed by jealousy and might have stopped me. So, at six years old, I built a machine. My first Synth. I created a persona, you know, a mature and respected man. And, uh… one day, my father came home from work and found my Synth sitting on the couch. That was the end of my biological father. Or, I should say, Old Daddy. Because that night, we moved, and the Synth became my new father figure. You see… nobody is going to hand a six-year-old an empire, so I created a front man, a symbolic leader for me.
-Boy Kavalier tells the Lost Boys about his childhood in Alien: Earth S1E8, “The Real Monsters”
It’s understandable why many fans initially suspected Kirsh was the Synth. Alien: Earth has consistently highlighted Kirsh as a key character. He’s frequently the Synth Boy Kavalier relies on to get things done. Kirsh also often scolds Boy Kavalier for his impulsive and foolish actions, such as when he kicked Boy Kavalier out of the lab for trying to open something in front of him. This “tough love” can easily be interpreted as a fatherly instinct. Furthermore, Kirsh actively cares for and helps raise the Hybrid children, strengthening that parental impression he gives off.
I always suspected it, but “The Real Monsters” finally confirms it: Atom Eins is the Synth from Boy Kavalier’s story! Honestly, the way Boy Kavalier describes him as “distinguished” should have been a dead giveaway. There’s simply no one more distinguished throughout the whole series! It totally explains why Atom is always around, looking after everything and Boy Kavalier himself, but never trying to be the center of attention. It just makes sense now that we know their connection!
Boy Kavalier’s Story Is Darker Than Anyone Expected
Judging by Boy Kavalier’s behavior, it seems likely he experienced a difficult childhood. He’s fixated on remaining youthful. He speaks about family with a lot of negativity, as if relatives are people to be disliked. When Wendy begs to keep her brother, Joe, on the island, he dismisses her, stating he simply doesn’t trust anyone who tries to control him – not brothers, parents, or anyone else. Careful viewers will probably realize Boy Kavalier likely suffered abuse from at least one parent, so his story about a harsh, alcoholic father isn’t particularly shocking. Given that he was constantly praised as a Boy Genius, it’s also not surprising that he built a Synth at just six years old.
The most disturbing thing about Atom Eins is the reason he was built. Atom wasn’t simply a Synth meant to be a companion and helper for Boy Kavalier. Boy Kavalier deliberately designed him to murder his biological father and take his place. Consider this: a six-year-old child created a robot with the intention of killing someone. Let that thought really settle in. And that’s not all Boy Kavalier planned for Atom. Atom Eins was given the ability to inflict harm on humans, which Synths aren’t programmed to do. Furthermore, he was created to *become* Boy Kavalier’s new father.
To most people, Atom Eins is known as the father of Boy Kavalier. Atom Eins also became the leading face of Prodigy, which enabled Boy Kavalier to build his company and what he calls his “empire” even as a young boy. The world readily gave him whatever he asked for as long as Atom was by his side. Considering the purpose behind Boy Kavalier’s initial Synth, it’s unsettling that a child so young could come up with something so diabolical. While Boy Kavalier was undoubtedly a kid genius, the truth is he was already planning murders, cover-ups, and takeovers by the age of six.
A lot of viewers initially disliked Boy Kavalier, assuming he’d be a typical villain whose only purpose was a dramatic death. However, as the story of Alien: Earth’s progressed, Boy Kavalier proved to be a standout character on modern television. He’s captivating, incredibly smart, a master manipulator, and just arrogant enough that his pride will likely lead to his downfall. But he’s also more than capable of competing with powerful organizations like Weyland-Yutani. In fact, Boy Kavalier skillfully defeated Yutani in a legal dispute when she attempted to recover her alien samples. The reveal about the Atom Eins plot is simply another demonstration of Boy Kavalier’s ruthless intelligence, cleverly disguised, which has been present all along.
