Movie production company, Constellation, has unveiled the initial phase of ticket sales for “The Captive”, a historical epic directed by Alejandro Amenábar – a filmmaker who won an Oscar for “The Sea Inside” and earned a BAFTA nomination for “The Others”.
The film titled ‘The Captive’ has been acquired by various international distributors: Haut et Court for France, Filmtrade/Tanweer for Greece and Cyprus, Nos Audiovisuais for Portugal, Pro Films for Bulgaria, Discovery for the Former Yugoslavia, and Russian World Vision for the CIS. Additionally, interest from North American buyers is growing.
The movie that was filmed last year across Valencia, Alicante, and Seville in Spain, is currently undergoing post-production. Set to hit Spanish theaters on October 17 alongside Disney, Film Constellation will soon reveal its first promotional material for potential buyers at the European Film Market.
The novel ‘The Captive’ focuses on the backstory of Miguel de Cervantes, the creator of ‘Don Quixote,’ who was kidnapped at the age of 28 by the North African Muslims (Moors) in Algiers.”
Or:
“In ‘The Captive,’ we delve into the early life of Miguel de Cervantes, famed author of ‘Don Quixote,’ as he was seized by the Moors in Algiers when he was 28 years old.”
Both versions convey the same meaning and context. The second one may be a bit more concise, but it maintains clarity for readers who might not be familiar with the historical context of the story.
The movie takes place in 1575. A 28-year-old Spanish navy soldier named Miguel de Cervantes, who’s been injured and captured by pirates from Turkey (Ottoman corsairs), is imprisoned in Algiers. He has a limited time to live if his fellow countrymen can’t pay his ransom quickly. However, within the walls of his cell, an unexpected sanctuary presents itself – the craft of storytelling.
The tales he shared fascinated both his fellow prisoners and Hasan, the mysterious and intimidating leader of Algiers, sparking a unique bond between the captor and the captured. As doubts swirled amidst escalating city tensions, Cervantes, guided by an unshakable hope, crafted a bold escape plan.
In the film, Julio Peña, known for “Berlin” and “Through My Window,” will be joined on screen by Alessandro Borghi, who is recognized for his roles in “The Eight Mountains” and “Supersex.” Alex Catalán handles the cinematography, Juan Pedro de Gaspar takes charge of production design, Nicoletta Taranta oversees costume design, Carolina Martínez edits the film, Ana Rubio manages visual effects, and Amenábar provides the music.
The movie is jointly created by Fernando Bovaira at Mod Producciones, Himenóptero, and Misent Producciones, in collaboration with Propaganda Italia. Netflix, RTVE, and RAI Cinema have also contributed to its production, while the project receives support from ICAA, Generalitat Valenciana, and Eurimages.
