Alan Wake 2 Update Lets You Disable The PS5 Pro's Most Defining Feature

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of game launches, updates, and everything in between. Alan Wake 2, a title I’ve been eagerly anticipating, has had a rocky start on the PlayStation 5 Pro. However, the recent update brings hope for improvement.

The game Alan Wake 2 hasn’t had a smooth debut on Sony’s advanced PlayStation 5 Pro console. Issues like poor image quality, recurring performance glitches, and trouble with the unique AI-upscaling technology, PSSR, have been reported. A fresh update for the survival-horror game is planned to address many of these problems, which include turning off the PSSR feature altogether.

In Alan Wake 2, players can switch between Performance-Stable Shading Rate (PSSR) and AMD’s Frame Rate Scalability (FSR) upscaling. When PSSR is turned off, the game reverts to FSR’s linear scaling method. Generally, PSSR has been superior to FSR, but in Alan Wake 2, Digital Foundry’s PS5 Pro analysis showed that FSR handled image quality issues more effectively. However, they also mentioned that overall, PSSR was a better choice for the game.

It seems evident that game developer Remedy is providing players with the freedom to make their own decisions, allowing them to bypass one of the key features of the upgraded PS5 model altogether, should they prefer. The latest update also introduces a new 40fps mode, which strikes a harmony between the image enhancements present in the PS5 Pro Quality mode and the smoothness of the Performance mode for those with a 120Hz compatible display.

Additionally, adjustments have been made to the Performance mode in terms of frame rate stability and reducing noise in ray-traced reflections. Other improvements have been implemented. This update also includes small changes to DLC content and minor fixes across all platforms. It’s now ready for download, with the detailed list of changes provided below.

Improvements and additions

  • [PS5 Pro] Added a new “Balanced” graphics mode. This mode requires compatible displays that can achieve a 120Hz refresh rate. The Balanced mode combines PS5 Pro Quality mode settings including raytracing with Performance mode resolution. This mode targets 40fps.
  • [PS5 Pro] Slightly adjusted visual settings of the Performance mode to achieve a more consistent framerate.
  • [PS5 Pro] Quality and Balanced mode: Adjusted Raytracing settings to achieve a less noisy image.
  • [PS5 Pro] Added an option to toggle PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) On/Off.

Fixes

  • [The Lake House] Fixed manuscript collectables that showed the wrong page in Saga’s Mind Place.
  • [The Lake House] Fixed “Welcome to the Lake House” video collectable missing audio.
  • Minor fixes and optimizations.
