I’m seeing a lot of positive buzz around War Machine. It dropped on Netflix today here in the US – folks down in Australia got a look back in February – and the critics seem to really like it. Right now, it’s sitting at an 81% score from reviewers, with general audiences giving it a 70%. It’s a solid start, and I’m definitely adding it to my watchlist.

War Machine is a decent action film, but it doesn’t explore its ideas very deeply and doesn’t give enough to do to its supporting actors. While John Ritchson delivers a solid performance and does his best to carry the movie, even a strong lead actor can’t save it from being ultimately forgettable. Unfortunately, War Machine won’t stay with viewers long after the credits roll.

War Machine follows an elite team of U.S. Army Rangers whose rigorous final selection training exercise unexpectedly becomes a desperate battle for survival against a terrifying enemy. The film, directed by Patrick Hughes, features Alan Ritchson, Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Keiynan Lonsdale, Jarryd Goundrey, and Daniel Webber.

In the film War Machine, Alan Ritchson plays a character identified only as Staff Sergeant 81. He recently thought about how a fight between that character and Jack Reacher – the lead role he’s most famous for – would play out.

Alan Ritchson thinks Reacher might simply be impulsive enough to kill someone without a clear motive, but he also acknowledges that the character is incredibly determined and doesn’t give up easily.
