Alan Ritchson, the star of the popular Prime Video series Reacher, recently revealed what worries him most about the upcoming fourth season. Season 4 will be based on Lee Child’s 2009 novel, Gone Tomorrow, and kicks off with Jack Reacher having a fateful and dangerous encounter with a stranger while traveling by train. This sets him up against some very powerful and dangerous enemies.
The new season doesn’t have a release date yet, though filming started in June. With a spinoff series starring Maria Sten as Frances Neagley also in development, it won’t be long before Jack Reacher returns. Alan Ritchson recently shared what’s been on his mind regarding the show.
Actor Alan Ritchson recently told ScreenRant that the fourth season of his show has an unusually high number of fight scenes – around 30, he estimates. He emphasized that each fight is important to the story, and he’s consciously trying to avoid repetitive action, similar to concerns about “fight fatigue” seen in shows like Game of Thrones. Ritchson wants the action to be meaningful, not just visually impressive. He shared these thoughts while discussing his new film, Playdate, which comes out on Prime Video November 12th.
We filmed around 30 fight scenes, which is more than we’ve ever done before. But we didn’t just add fights for the sake of action. I’m always thinking about audience fatigue – I’ve noticed watching shows with my wife that she gets tired of constant fighting. I actually get excited when the fights start, but she wants to tune them out! I never want viewers to feel overwhelmed or disengaged. Every fight needs to matter and have a purpose. You need to care about the characters and understand why they’re fighting. We’ve really focused on that this season, and even though we’ve set a new record for the number of fights, they all serve a purpose and will be exciting to watch.
Honestly, I’m really recognizing a lot of faces in the cast of Reacher this season! You’ve got Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette, Sydelle Noel – who I loved as Cherry Bang in GLOW and now plays Jack’s new love interest – and a bunch of other great actors like Agnez Mo, Anggun, Kevin Corrigan, and Kevin Weisman. And get this, Marc Blucas, who’s currently in My Life with the Walter Boys, was Riley Finn in Buffy the Vampire Slayer – a show I grew up with! It’s cool to see so many familiar talents bringing these characters to life.
Despite the return of beloved characters, the show’s fight scenes have faced some criticism. Many viewers feel they aren’t as impactful as those in the first season, often lacking the same excitement and creativity. The prison fight from season one is frequently cited as a prime example of the show’s potential when it’s at its best.
Some viewers feel the show Reacher makes its main character unrealistically powerful. It will be interesting to see how the creators, led by Nick Santora, address this feedback, especially as the show gains more attention for its action sequences.
