Although Alan Ritchson’s latest Netflix film isn’t connected to his role as Jack Reacher in the Prime Video series, he still brings many of Reacher’s strong and determined qualities to his new character.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really impressed with Alan Ritchson – he’s quickly becoming a major name in Hollywood and always seems to pick interesting roles. But honestly, it’s tough to see him as anyone but Jack Reacher! He embodies the character so perfectly in that Prime Video series. It’s funny, even in his new Netflix sci-fi action movie, I still get a little bit of that Jack Reacher vibe from his performance – he just naturally brings that intensity to everything he does.
Although the new Netflix action movie isn’t related to the ‘Reacher’ series and falls into a different category, Alan Ritchson’s performance feels reminiscent of his work in that show – and that’s a good thing. He fully embodies the character and, as usual, gives a standout performance.
Alan Ritchson’s Character In War Machine Isn’t Too Different From Jack Reacher

In the Netflix film War Machine, Alan Ritchson plays a soldier named Staff Sergeant 81 who dreams of joining the Army Rangers. The movie starts with intense training scenes where his character easily surpasses everyone else. Similar to the character Jack Reacher, he’s a powerful hero who’s quiet and lets his skills speak for themselves.
Like the character Jack Reacher, Ritchson’s character in War Machine is quiet and reserved, and his aggressive approach sometimes clashes with his superiors. Even so, he’s put in charge of leading a team of Rangers for a training mission.
Similar to how Reacher investigates his brother’s death and seeks revenge in the first season, Staff Sergeant 81 is deeply affected by the loss of his younger brother. This loss motivates him to join the Rangers, hoping to achieve a dream they both shared. From there, his story becomes one of healing and finding peace, much like Reacher, as he struggles with his grief and attempts to find meaning after tragedy.
Even when watching Staff Sergeant 81 lead his team, it’s hard not to be reminded of Alan Ritchson’s character leading the Special Investigation Unit in season two of Reacher. Throughout that series, Neagley often voices what Reacher is thinking internally. Similarly, in War Machine, a different soldier acts as a sounding board, helping 81 guide his team of Rangers as they fight an alien enemy.
Alan Ritchson’s character in War Machine is more complex than his role as Jack Reacher. Still, he brings the same sense of cool confidence and understated power to the new part that made his performance as Reacher so compelling.
It’s clear that Alan Ritchson truly embodies the character of Jack Reacher in Netflix’s War Machine. He really captures the essence of the role.
Ritchson’s Performance In War Machine Makes Reacher Season 4 More Exciting
Season 4 of Reacher is based on Lee Child’s novel Gone Tomorrow, making it different from previous seasons. Unlike the earlier installments, where Jack Reacher typically investigated crimes connected to his past and sought revenge, this season appears to be a new direction for the Prime Video series.
Season 4 of Reacher, hinted at by the title Gone Tomorrow, will focus on the character grappling with guilt over failing to protect a woman who needed his help.
Alan Ritchson gives a compelling performance in War Machine as a soldier haunted by his brother’s death and burdened by self-blame. The film centers on his path to self-forgiveness. Considering how convincingly Ritchson portrays a character grappling with PTSD and guilt in War Machine, it’s easy to see why he’s well-suited to play the lead in Reacher season 4.
Alan Ritchson has consistently delivered a fantastic performance as Jack Reacher in the Prime Video series. His previous role in Netflix’s War Machine suggests he’ll continue to be a great fit for the character and shine in season 4 of Reacher.
