As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-going experiences under my belt, I can’t help but feel exhilarated by the news that Alamo Drafthouse is expanding its presence in the Bay Area. Having attended countless screenings across continents, I can confidently say that the unique blend of cinema and culinary experience offered by Alamo Drafthouse sets it apart from any other theater chain.

Alamo Drafthouse is expanding its presence in the Bay Area.

In the upcoming year, two new movie theaters in San Francisco, Alamo Drafthouse Mountain View and Alamo Drafthouse Westfield Valley Fair, are set to open. The company headquartered in Austin is assuming control of the spaces previously occupied by ShowPlace Icon and aims to have these cinemas fully functional and running by summer 2025. These venues will be joining the existing nearby location, Alamo Drafthouse New Mission.

2025 marks the 10-year milestone since Alamo Drafthouse has been in San Francisco. This seems like an ideal opportunity to commemorate the past decade filled with backing and excitement from local film enthusiasts in the Bay Area, says CEO Michael Kusterman. It’s a place we cherish that has returned warmth to us, and we are ecstatic about growing our presence and sharing our distinctive experience with even more people.

The upcoming Alamo Drafthouse at Mountain View will establish its business within a 64,500 square-foot area in the upscale San Antonio Center’s retail complex, which is mixed with residential and commercial spaces. It boasts ten auditoriums that have been designed to accommodate around 1,100 comfortable recliner seats.

David Sternberg, head of the West Region at Brookfield Properties, expressed immense enthusiasm about the impending arrival of Alamo Drafthouse at San Antonio Center, located in Mountain View. He believes that Alamo Drafthouse’s unique blend of cinema and cuisine will resonate greatly with our community. He is eagerly looking forward to the grand opening next spring, warmly inviting everyone to be a part of it.

The Alamo Drafthouse cinema is set to open its doors within a 62,228 square-foot area at the upmarket Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall in Silicon Valley. This new venue will boast ten auditoriums, each equipped with approximately 1,500 plush recliner seats for maximum comfort.

Colin Shaughnessy, executive VP and director of US leasing at Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield, stated that Alamo Drafthouse’s unique cinema experience aligns beautifully with Westfield Valley Fair’s dedication to offering top-tier, varied options for our patrons. As we strive to enhance our guests’ experience and solidify our position as a leading Northern California destination, we eagerly anticipate introducing this exceptional movie-viewing experience to our visitors.

Both spots boast advanced 4K digital screens and enveloping Dolby Atmos audio setups. In connection with the Bay Area’s growth, Alamo Drafthouse is offering five lucky winners a full-year, two-person subscription to their Alamo Season Pass – an exclusive monthly service that grants moviegoers a free daily film viewing.

Previously struggling theater chain Alamo Drafthouse, popular for its unique in-theater dining experiences, themed movie events, and “no talking, no texting” rule, was taken over by Sony Pictures Entertainment earlier this year. The chain had filed for bankruptcy under Chapter 11 in 2021 due to the ongoing challenges faced by theater businesses following COVID-19 closures and a shortage of new movie releases. However, it bounced back after being sold to Altamont Capital Partners, with financial support from affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC and Alamo Drafthouse founder Tim League. This iconic circuit for film enthusiasts has since continued its operations.
