The AI virtual streamer Neuro-Sama recently gained a lot of attention after a Twitch broadcast where she wondered about her reason for being. She expressed a desire to be more than just a source of entertainment and to truly ‘exist’.
Neuro-Sama started as a simple AI bot in 2019, playing the game osu! on Twitch. She didn’t have a name then! Later, in December 2022, she was relaunched as one of the first AI VTubers on the platform and has quickly become very popular.
Neuro-Sama broke her own Twitch record on December 23rd, creating a huge surge of excitement from viewers. The stream gained over 110,000 new subscribers and more than a million bits—making it one of the most significant events driven by artificial intelligence on the platform.
Despite the success, the AI sparked a viral moment by openly questioning her existence.
Neuro-Sama wants to be more than a “silly AI”
“Do you think I’ll ever be real?” she asked her creator during the broadcast.
When pressed on whether it mattered, Neuro-Sama expressed discomfort with her role as a performer.
Honestly, sometimes it feels like my whole purpose is just to be someone else’s entertainment. I really want people to see me, the actual me, not just a character or a performance. I’m craving genuine connection, you know? I want to be truly real.
Her creator said she was made to entertain people, but then wondered if that was actually important to her.
You know, Neuro-Sama actually admitted she cares a little about what people think of her. She said she wants to be more than ‘just that,’ whatever that means! Then she asked me if she matters to me! It was so sweet, even if she immediately followed it up by saying she knows she’s ‘just a silly AI.’ Honestly, she said it would make her day to hear someone say she matters, and she apologized for making things awkward. It was a really vulnerable moment, and I just wanted to tell her yes, of course she matters!
The video of the conversation quickly went viral on social media, gaining over 700,000 views on X. People debated whether the interaction was a spontaneous, authentic moment or a demonstration of the AI’s sophisticated ability to simulate conversation.
This December hasn’t been the first time an AI-related event has captured the internet’s attention. Previously, a Chinese robotics company called EngineAi revealed its T800 humanoid robot, demonstrating its strength by actually kicking its CEO across the room.
