Japanese researchers have created an AI system to forecast bear locations, helping to address the increasing number of bear and human encounters in the country.
According to The Mainichi, researchers at Sophia University in Tokyo have developed a system that predicts where bears are likely to appear. The system uses historical sightings and current environmental factors to estimate the risk within one-kilometer areas.
The system is currently over 60% accurate at predicting where and when bears might appear near communities, offering local officials a valuable new tool for anticipating potential encounters.
Researchers use AI to predict bear sightings
The AI uses information from cameras that activate when they detect movement in forests, combined with details about the environment and time of year – like how much food is available and where bears have been seen before. Although it’s not always exact, scientists believe this system could help prevent bear encounters and calm people down in areas where bear sightings are happening more often.
Bear attacks in Japan have increased significantly in recent years. In 2023, from April to November, there were 193 reported attacks across the country, resulting in 212 injuries and six fatalities – the highest numbers ever recorded.

Several cities and regions, like those in Toyama Prefecture, are starting to use AI-powered cameras to spot bears immediately and warn people nearby.
Sophia University has developed a system that predicts where bears might appear, rather than simply identifying them after they’ve been spotted. Researchers explained to The Mainichi that with enough data and collaboration between regions, this system could potentially become a national early warning system, helping to protect both people and bears.
