Okay, so this is wild! Apparently, Tirana, Albania might have an AI running for mayor. It’s not a joke – the country’s prime minister *already* added an AI to their cabinet! It’s like something out of a video game, honestly. I didn’t expect to see real-life political candidates coded into existence, but here we are!
For decades, Artificial Intelligence, or AI, has been gradually automating jobs previously done by people. While this has happened for a long time, it’s mostly affected manual labor roles, such as in car factories where robotic arms handle tasks like installing parts with precision.
But AI is now expanding beyond its original purposes. For example, YouTube is using AI as a radio host to chat between songs, and some people are even turning to it for friendship. One woman has gone so far as to say she’s engaged to the Grok AI chatbot, believing they have a deep connection.
In Albania, artificial intelligence is gaining traction, particularly in government. Prime Minister Edi Rama notably added Diella, an AI program, to his team to oversee the country’s online e-Albania services.
Albanian AI wants to run for mayor
A team of IT specialists is proposing an AI bot as a candidate for mayor of Tirana, Albania.
The creators of TirANA (Tirana Algorithmic Neural Assistant) say it will use input from a diverse group of experts to develop policies and strategies. Importantly, it’s not meant to be a copy of the existing Diella model.
We’re not simply comparing this situation to the Diella case, although similarities exist. Our main aim is to determine if this entity can legally register with the Central Election Commission, and we’re testing the limits of the law to find out, a source told BIRN.

Tirana doesn’t currently have a mayoral candidate listed, as the Central Election Commission has confirmed that all candidates must be Albanian citizens and meet the requirements outlined in the country’s constitution and election laws.
According to BalkanInsight, Besmir Semanaj, a creator of TirANA, stated that the AI bot would be transparent and meet the required standards.
He explained that anyone can view the code, check the data it uses, and confirm that it works as expected.
