Ahead of New Sherlock Holmes Series, Robert Downey Jr’s 17-Year-Old Action Thriller Hits No. 10 on Prime Video

Great news for Sherlock Holmes fans! Robert Downey Jr.’s first Sherlock Holmes movie is back in the top 10 on Prime Video, and a brand new series, Young Sherlock, just dropped its first season of eight episodes.

According to FlixPatrol, the movie Sherlock Holmes has climbed back to number 10 on the Top 10 Movies chart on Prime Video in the U.S. This likely happened because the new show Young Sherlock recently premiered – both Sherlock Holmes and Young Sherlock were directed by Guy Ritchie.

Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes Kicked Off a New Wave of Adaptations

The 2009 film Sherlock Holmes features Robert Downey Jr. as the brilliant but unusual detective Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as his friend and partner, Dr. John Watson. Together, they investigate a series of murders and work to stop a criminal who appears to be using supernatural powers to try and take over Britain.

The enduring popularity of Sherlock Holmes led to a resurgence of adaptations in the 2010s. The BBC’s Sherlock debuted in 2010, followed by Elementary on CBS in 2012. Additionally, a sequel to the 2009 film Sherlock Holmes was released in 2011, again directed by Guy Ritchie.

Nearly two decades on, adaptations of the story continue, with Watson currently being shown on CBS and becoming available on Prime Video earlier today, March 4th. Ritchie directed the first two episodes of the new series, while Anders Engström, Dennie Gordon, and Tricia Brock each directed one of the remaining five episodes.

Okay, so even though Guy Ritchie directed it, this Young Sherlock isn’t part of the Robert Downey Jr. films. It’s a completely separate take on the character, with Hero Fiennes Tiffin stepping into the role. And get this – Dónal Finn and Max Irons play young Moriarty and Mycroft Holmes, which is a really cool way to show how those iconic rivals got their start.

I’m so excited about Young Sherlock! It shows a really different side of the famous detective – a young, flawed, and still-developing Sherlock who gets thrown into a murder mystery at Oxford. The story follows his very first case, and it sounds like he’s a bit reckless as he tries to solve it. Apparently, it’s a huge, international conspiracy that completely transforms him. It’s going to be fascinating to see how he becomes the Sherlock we all know and love!

Is Sherlock Holmes 3 Ever Happening?

The movies Sherlock Holmes and Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows were huge hits with both critics and audiences, earning Warner Bros. over $1 billion globally. Because of this success, it was natural for the studio to start planning a third film.

For nearly ten years, a third Sherlock Holmes movie seemed stuck in limbo. However, according to reliable sources like Daniel Richtman, it’s now moving forward again. It’s currently unknown whether director Guy Ritchie will return, as Dexter Fletcher was previously considered to take over, but that was planned for a 2021 release.

Sherlock Holmes and Young Sherlock are streaming on Prime Video.
