Fans of Stranger Things have been waiting a long time for the second part of Season 5, which isn’t scheduled to arrive until 2025. While the wait continues, new information shows the show has been incredibly successful beyond just how many people watch it on Netflix. And, just like with Kate Bush’s song in Season 4, music will likely play a crucial role in revealing hints about what’s to come in Volume 2 – all you need is a Netflix subscription to find out!
First things for, though: let’s hear it for Diana Ross!
Classics Are Coming Back
Following the success of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” in 2022 – boosted by its use in Stranger Things – the show’s music choices are once again impacting what people listen to. Spotify reports a huge surge in streams and searches for ‘80s music, particularly Diana Ross’s 1980 hit “Upside Down.” Gen Z listeners have increased their streams of the song by a remarkable 1250%, while overall global streams are up 510% and global searches have jumped by 3538%.
Tiffany’s “I Think We’re Alone Now” (1987) comes in second in two of the three categories, followed by The Chordette’s “Mr. Sandman” (1954) at #3 and ABBA’s “Fernando” (1976) at #4. I’d say that it’s a very safe bet that Tiffany fans in ’87 weren’t picturing a little girl trapped in a mind prison while listening to the song, and ABBA listeners back in the ’70s couldn’t have imagined that a suburban mom would be facing off against a Demogorgon to “Fernando.”.
It was a smart move by the Stranger Things creators to hold off on using Diana Ross’s “Upside Down” until the final season. While the song clearly connects to the show’s ‘Upside Down’ setting—which has been a key part of the story from the start—saving it for the last season, and having Robin play it at The Squawk, felt particularly fitting.
How To Get New Clues For Volume 2
Fans eager for new music from the next part of Stranger Things won’t have to wait long for hints. Starting Tuesday, December 16th, the official Stranger Things Spotify playlist will transform into Hawkins’ WSQK, also known as The Squawk. Robin will host, and Maya Hawke will share messages containing clues about what’s coming in Volume 2.
Okay, so here’s the deal: this special chance to unlock clues won’t last long while we’re all waiting for the next episodes. They’re releasing hints daily from December 16th to the 18th, and each morning at 8 a.m. Eastern, we’ll get a new message from Robin. That’s perfect if you’re on the East Coast, but West Coasters (and anyone who likes to sleep in!) might have to set an alarm.
Not every broadcast will contain a clue, but pay attention to any numbers Robin mentions, just like the characters in Stranger Things. The last clue will be revealed on December 18th, giving participants a head start before Volume 2 is released. You can participate worldwide, but only through the Spotify mobile app.
Fans can continue enjoying the world of Stranger Things while waiting for new episodes. Following a first release around Thanksgiving, Netflix is strategically timing releases to holidays, with Volume 2 arriving on Christmas Day. The Duffer Brothers have confirmed the series finale – lasting just over two hours – will conclude the Stranger Things story on New Year’s Eve.
