Marvel Studios is planning to bring some of Marvel’s most famous comic book events to life with upcoming movies, including Avengers: Secret Wars. The Avengers films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have already drawn inspiration from classic storylines like Avengers #1 (1963), Age of Ultron (2013), The Infinity Gauntlet (1991), and Civil War (2006), but there are still many other great Avengers stories from the comics waiting to be adapted.
As a huge Marvel fan, I’m so excited for what’s coming! It looks like the fifth and sixth Avengers movies – Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars – will bring the epic Secret Wars storylines from the comics to life, wrapping up everything we’ve been building toward in the Multiverse Saga. Apparently, after these big team-up movies, the Avengers might share the spotlight a bit more with the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and other heroes. But honestly, there’s SO much amazing Avengers history in the comics, I can’t wait to see what other incredible stories they pull from for future movies! It feels like the possibilities are endless.
Avengers vs. X-Men Seems like an Obvious Choice
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will bring together heroes from both the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers teams and the X-Men franchise, marking the return of those characters to live-action. With members of both teams appearing, some fans believe the film will adapt the ‘Avengers vs. X-Men’ storyline. This comic book arc involved a conflict between the two teams over the Phoenix Force – the Avengers wanted to destroy it, while the X-Men aimed to control its power.
Although it’s improbable we’ll see the Phoenix Force in Avengers: Doomsday, a fight between the Avengers from our universe (Earth-616) and the X-Men from another (Earth-10005) isn’t out of the question. A better time to adapt the Avengers vs. X-Men storyline might be after the Doomsday and Secret Wars events, especially with new mutants being introduced. This would allow Marvel to stay truer to the popular comic book series. Avengers vs. X-Men is a huge event in Marvel Comics, and it feels almost certain to happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe eventually.
Original Sin Is the Perfect Continuation of What If…
Following the success of the animated series What If…?, which showed us alternate realities, a live-action adaptation of the Marvel comic Original Sin (2014) seems likely. The story centers on the Avengers investigating a murder—the killing of Uatu, a cosmic being who can see all possible futures—and the theft of his powerful eyes. Because this storyline heavily features Nick Fury, and given the events of Secret Invasion and The Marvels, it would be a perfect fit for Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Both Secret Invasion and The Marvels faced challenges in 2023 – Secret Invasion received low ratings, and while The Marvels got good reviews, it didn’t do well in theaters. Despite this, giving the character Nick Fury a key role in a story based on Original Sin – potentially leading to his transformation into the Unseen – could be a great way to revitalize his arc. The Original Sin storyline also includes a large ensemble of Marvel heroes, making it an ideal foundation for a major crossover event in the MCU.
Empyre Brings the Skrulls Back
The conflict between the Kree and Skrull empires has been building in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the film Captain Marvel in 2019. This ongoing rivalry could potentially lead to a storyline inspired by the 2020 Marvel comic event Empyre. That story featured a powerful Kree/Skrull hybrid—who is also a former Young Avenger and the husband of Wiccan—leading a combined Kree and Skrull fleet against Earth’s heroes. Adapting Empyre would be a fantastic way to bring together all the hints about the Kree, Skrull, and Young Avengers that have been appearing in the MCU.
Recent Marvel Studios movies and shows have clearly been building towards the introduction of the Young Avengers, with characters like Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, Wiccan, Speed, and Stature already appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Teddy Altman, also known as Hulkling, hasn’t shown up yet, his importance to the team and his established relationship suggest he’ll be a key addition soon. The storyline from the ‘Empyre’ comic event, which involved a conflict between the Kree/Skull alliance and Earth’s heroes, feels like a natural next step for the MCU to adapt.
Operation: Galactic Storm Brings the MCU More into Space
In 1992, Marvel published a 19-issue story called Operation: Galactic Storm, an ambitious space adventure. It featured the Avengers stepping into a massive war between two powerful alien empires: the Kree and the Shi’ar, who are often connected to the X-Men. The conflict puts Earth’s sun in danger, leading the Avengers to try and restore peace. Many fans would love to see this story adapted, especially after recent cosmic explorations in the comics.
The storyline Operation: Galactic Storm features a large team of over 20 Avengers divided into three groups: one defending Earth, and the others attempting to negotiate with the Kree and Shi’ar empires. This makes it an ideal story for a crossover event, allowing for multiple interconnected narratives – similar to how Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame were structured. Adapting this story would be a fantastic way to revitalize the Avengers franchise.
Civil War II Gives Captain Marvel a Bigger Role
The 2016 film, Civil War II, focuses on a disagreement between Iron Man and Captain Marvel that divides the superhero community. The conflict begins with the appearance of Ulysses Cain, a young hero who can see the future. Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) clash over whether to act on these predictions to stop crimes before they happen, resulting in intense and heartbreaking moments.
Marvel’s Civil War II comic event, similar to 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, could be an ideal basis for a third Captain Marvel film. If Brie Larson returns as the character, Marvel Studios might aim for a bigger, more impactful story. Because the Inhumans aren’t central to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a Civil War II adaptation could instead center around a mutant with the power to see the future, which would align well with the MCU’s plans for its next major story arc.
Siege Puts the Sentry Front and Center
Despite mixed reviews, the Disney+ series Secret Invasion had the potential to set up a storyline based on the 2010 Marvel comic event Siege. In Siege, Loki tricks villains into creating a team of Dark Avengers and launching an attack on Asgard, which was positioned over Broxton, Oklahoma. This forces the Avengers to reunite and defend Asgard, ultimately leading to its destruction and the appearance of a powerful entity called the Void, connected to the hero Sentry.
The way President Ritson announced war on aliens in the finale of Secret Invasion creates a perfect setup for the Siege storyline. With New Asgard already existing in Norway after Avengers: Endgame, it seems even more probable that this story will come to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In the comics, Norman Osborn is a well-known character before Siege begins, and adapting this story for live-action would be a fantastic way to introduce this famous villain to the MCU.
Contest of Chaos Follows in the Footsteps of Agatha All Along
Marvel’s recent shows and movies may have set the stage for the story of Contest of Chaos to unfold within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. The story centers on Agatha Harkness, who uses dark magic to turn Marvel heroes against each other in a battle with Scarlet Witch. Given the events of WandaVision and the popular song Agatha All Along, bringing Contest of Chaos into the MCU would be a natural fit.
Following the events of Agatha All Along, Agatha Harkness (played by Kathryn Hahn) now exists as a spirit, guiding Wiccan. While it’s unknown if or when she’ll reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a potential return is hinted at. If Agatha, the Scarlet Witch, and the dangerous book called the Darkhold were to come back, it would be amazing to see Agatha use the book’s power to control heroes and turn them against each other – a storyline that would be ideal for a large-scale crossover event.
Avengers West Coast Can Use the Lesser Know Heroes of the MCU
While not directly based on a single comic book storyline, the Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be building towards introducing the West Coast Avengers. This team first appeared in The West Coast Avengers #1 in 1984, created by Hawkeye (Clint Barton) at the suggestion of Vision, with the goal of extending the Avengers’ reach. Having faced villains like the Abomination, Ultron, and Kraven the Hunter, there’s a lot of potential for exciting storylines when they finally appear in an MCU movie.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe already has several heroes on the West Coast who could form a new team. She-Hulk (Jennifer Walters), Wonder Man (Simon Williams), and War Machine (James Rhodes) are all located in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Ant-Man (Scott Lang), Wasp (Hope van Dyne), Stature (Cassie Lang), Shang-Chi, and Katy are based in San Francisco. These heroes, along with groups like the Young Avengers and New Avengers, could potentially take over for the original Avengers team.
Avengers Disassembled Seems Like a Perfect Move
The 2004 comic book storyline Avengers Disassembled dramatically shook up the Marvel Universe. It led to the breakup of the Avengers team and involved the exile or deaths of several key members. This story would make an excellent basis for a live-action crossover movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and could open the door for introducing the Young Avengers and adapting the famous House of M storyline.
Breaking up the Avengers team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after events like Doomsday and Secret Wars would create opportunities to introduce and develop new teams, like the Young Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four. Bringing back Wanda Maximoff, who died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, would be particularly impactful. Her story arc closely mirrors the Avengers Disassembled comic book storyline, and her current vulnerable state would make for a compelling narrative.
Kang Dynasty Would Be a Controversial Choice for the MCU
The fifth Avengers movie was initially planned as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, intended to be the epic conclusion of the storyline Marvel had been building around Kang the Conqueror. Jonathan Majors played Kang in both Loki and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, establishing him as the main villain for the Multiverse Saga. Although Majors is no longer involved, Marvel has already laid the groundwork for a Kang Dynasty storyline and could still pursue it.
As a huge Marvel fan, I remember reading Kang Dynasty back in 2001 – it was a classic! The story brought Kang the Conqueror and his son, Marcus, to our time with the goal of world domination. They actually succeed for a while, which made it a really tense read, but ultimately, Earth’s heroes banded together and took him down. Now that Kang has been introduced in the MCU, I’m really hoping they adapt this storyline. It would be amazing to see some different versions of Kang played by new actors! Honestly, there are so many fantastic Marvel events that could make it to the big screen, so it’s just a matter of waiting to see what happens.
